I’m not sure there’s a great mystery to it tbh.In the last 40 years if you look at the list of managers Robson and venables clearly stand out as quality. And those were our two best tournaments. Its really not rocket science.Next was probably hoddle ,if he hadn’t been fired things may have been very different.Eriksen had the best squad ever and majorly underperformed.Capello I would have expected more, but obviously players didn’t take to his methods. The rest of the appointments you look back now and wonder why?Southgate is another if he fails you could say it was obvious he would.I have a glimmer of hope re Southgate in that he tells it like it is,and speaks very well. Also he has a big hand in youth policy. But does he have experience or tactical nous we will find out.Id say 80% of our failure over last 40 years has pure and simple been the wrong manager.

I think Hoddle was the best they had since Robson. Venables didn't have to qualify for a tournament, England were **** in the the majority of friendlies he had and in a tournament where they played all five of their games at Wembley the won two, Scotland and an out of sorts Holland, and drew three, Switzerland, Spain (very lucky too) and Germany, with a very decent side during a period where a lot of the better European nations were struggling, Italy and Holland for instance. I think Venables is one up from Big Ron, just, he's a bit of a d!ckhead who is often given far more credit and praise than he deserves.

Hoddle was different. He qualified well for France 98, played players where they were best suited, employed a system that, largely, worked with the players he had and he recognized talent and it's potential, picking Rio for the World Cup squad when he was just 19. People slated him for his treatment of Beckham but he wasn't 100% sure on him and his attitude, and he was kind of proven right against Argentina. People gave him **** about Gazza but he was absolutely spot on to make that decision, and it took balls to do that. How many England managers recognized and utilized Beckham's ability as a central midfielder?

Just, wow. I know it’s a different manager now, and Woy loved the ‘big clubs’ but it makes it even more puzzling why on earth Noble didn’t get at least a call up 2 years ago :?

Ruben Loftus cheek who's done dick all for Palace or Chelsea bar the occasional dive.

He's done nothing at all to justify his call up right now.

Young was absolutely brilliant against Spurs.

Both have had plenty of game time this season.

Delph has played all 90 minutes of their last 4, and came on as sub in the 2 prior to that.

Young has started Man U's last 6 matches.

I don't rate Cahill and Dier tbh, as they are far too prone to errors. Maybe worth it as subs but I'd give Shawcross another chance as he's now fully fit and basically stopped Watford from creating any chances against Stoke. Also, Henderson has been incredibly mediocre for Liverpool and England ,so unsure why he's in the squad.

You want Shawcross in the England squad because he stopped Watford creating chances?

Think you have to look beyond club form and remember Southgate knows these young players very well. Many on here laughed at winks inclusion, pretty sure they aren’t laughing now.Abraham and loftus have huge potential, don’t know enough about gomes.Winks inclusion has paid off ,if Southgate can find one more gem before Russia its worth it,nothing to lose.Love how honest he was about smalling and wilshere.Shawcross over dier is laughable I’m sorry.dier has just anchored a spurs defence over 2 legs against Real Madrid that’s hardly Watford lol.

Isn't that what the under 21's is suppose to be for though? He has just 6 caps for them since 2015.

I think it's more as it's a few games for a "big" club and your called up rather than against a youngster with talent.

I reckon there are quite a few that have never heard of Gomez as well so seems more odd.
