Now you've said it, it does ring bells... only one I can find though is from last year's testimonial match:

+500 points for the location. ^^

The Tevez salute speaks libraries, not volumes, about our club. Bloke felt the affection we showed him, even though we all knew the club was merely a very expensive (for us, of course) stepping stone.

The first time I saw it was after the 2005 play off final
I think it was the next day or so after
there was a victory parade
and when the open top bus got to the BG
all the players went up to the balcony
and thats when Jimmy walker raised his crutches in the crossed hammers sign

Yes but people have always done that, the press never missed a photo opportunity involving players holding up something that represented the crossed hammers, normally a couple of Hammers.
its the crossed arms bit that appears to have come from nowhere.

Incredible considering we have mostly all been around during its formation just how little evidence or knowledge of how it started seems to exist. Would be fantastic if someone uncovered a photo from 60s to 80s (even better if earlier) showing it but does seem a very recent development, certainly not something I was aware of prior to the last decade or so. Can't somehow imagine Ron Greenwood countenencing it that's for sure.

Anyone remember a little while ago a reporter posted a picture of one of ours giving it the crossed saying it was tribute to someone inside, everyone got their knickers in a twist and it turned out he was pissing about.

Didn't Gary Oldham do it in the football hooligan film "The Firm" ?

It was done at my school in the 80's.

Does anyone still have that picture laying around of William Carvalho's childhood best friend doing it next to him when he thought he was signing for a London club run by reasonable people and not dildo gnomes?

Many theologians have questioned the authenticity of the shroud largely due to the poor quality of the crossed hammers.

He's more likely standing in a wall, in training, awaiting one of Nobes' famous free kicks...

Either that, or its a Billy Connolly commemorative tea-towel...

I think it started to take off after Sears did it. He got a lot of attention as he was a local boy who scored a late winner only five minutes into his debut, so a lot of people saw the picture.

With regards to scoring, the point at which your arms cross needs to be taken into account, as does the distance between your arms and chest. If they cross anywhere other than the midway point of the forearm, if your forearms are anything other than 8"-12" from your chest (especially if you're hugging yourself), if your forearms and upper arms aren't at approximately 90º, it looks [even more] naff [than it almost always does].

Utj, if there's any way of unearthing that amazing dicksie thread, please do. It was Hall of Fame material.

I've been here since 1963 but the first time I noticed it was when Freddie Sears did it after scoring on his debut - what a great moment that was.
That was in March 2008, but as UTJ has already shown, the photo of Craig Bellamy from October 2007. Same season though.
Both have arms above the head - which from my personal view is the best way and is certainly not wrong.

A mate tells me that there is a photo of David Cross doing the crossed hammers above the head on the 1980 Cup Final lap of honour. I have searched but have never found it.

If it was done in the 60's, I never saw it.

It would be good to find the real first photo evidence. So far it's the Eamon Dolan picture.
