I believe he was very close to joining Man Utd back then (from us). Deal didn't happen in the end but can't remember exactly why, ran out of time perhaps?

That's the stuff of legend.

Indeed. The fact it was fleeting and ended in crushing disappointment doesn't disqualify him from entering West Ham lore, it's generally a pre-requisite for entry.

Constancy, longevity and happy endings have no business here.

His leaving is all bundled up in the regret I feel about what's happened to this club.
At the end of one season, we beat Man U under the lights at the Boleyn, qualified for Europe and had a player nominated for the Ballon d'Or.
Look where we are now.

Walked away at a time when we became West Ham London instead of West Ham United

Can't knock him for that, great choice

That same week we conceded eight goals in three matches. Sadly in the two years since we have done next to nothing to address this major weakness in our side.

Cup game at home to Accrington Stanley. Absolutely dire game (most exciting thing was their fans) and AC looking more likely to end up victors than us. 90th minute we get a free kick 25 yards out. Up steps Dimi and bang 1-0. Game over.

Thank you Dimi for saving me from having to spend another 30 mins watching that *****

I think the Euro's killed us. He was one of the stand out performers of that tournament and I dare say he got his head turned by a few clubs.

I assumed he went home to save his marriage after getting involved with a young lass over here...

Either way, shame he didn't give us a little bit more time. He was majestic and as others have said, it would be amazing to watch him in a trio with Arnautovic and Lanzini.

This, a million times this. And those middle aged men certainly won't be telling their children that he left because of being a prat or tantrum thrower, but rather our owners couldn't match his ambition and misled him rather than supporting him with better players.

DiCanio wouldn't leave West Ham, his love for us was too much.

That's a fact, he could have joined Manchester United, he turned them down.

And 18 months later, we'd bought then loaned out his replacement and were scrabbling around bargain bins on deadline day.

Monaco drawing 0-0 today gives Payet and Marseille the chance to jump into a Champions League place tomorrow.

So he is captaining a side potentially to a European final and runners up behind PSG (who bought the most expensive player in the world and have the 2nd most expensive player lined up on loan).

I think he made the right choice...

Jinxed nailed it when he left, no investment in a striker and the toys were thrown out of the pram.

Club are to blame...when you have the best player we have seen for many a year, he needs to see the club developing to stay .... we didnt and have continued to decline since.

Special, special player and will always look out for him....would take him back in a flash and buy a season ticket to boot.

Completely agree, took no pleasure in seeing him leave the pitch in the way he did last night, and it'll be a huge shame if he doesn't make the World Cup.
