Statement from Ryan Mason. "I have worked tirelessly in order to be able to return to the pitch. Unfortunately, having taken expert medical advice I now have no option but to retire due to the risks involved given the nature of my injury."

What a big, big shame. I thought he was a tidy little player.

Its a shame he has had to retire but at least he has come through and been able to live his life again, even though that won't involve playing football.

So sad, absolutely horrendous injury, remember seeing his face when he went down and he looked terrified.

Even if it was physically safe to play again, mentally I doubt he'd want to, hope he goes on to have a long career in the game outside of playing

Makes me incredibly sad to see a player cut down before his prime.

What gets me angry is that little sods like Ravel Morrison and Michael Johnson squander their talents whilst players like Ryan and our very own Dean Ashton get their future's cruelly snatched from them by fate.

Sad to read he had to retire but the important thing is his health - Good Luck , Ryan .

Worse injury I have ever seen live on TV the poor guy, you could hear it all. Life is more important than football so he is doing the right thing. Maybe he can get a nice early start on his coaching badges or something.

Poor sod, wish him well in his future

I remember the accidental clash of heads, bloody horrible. I guess we are lucky that there are not more serious cases, considering the amount of accidental clashes that you see on a football field/sport etc.

Seems like a fairly smart feller when you read his interviews. Here's hoping he can build a long, successful and happy life for himself.

Shame. He looked a decent player prior to his injury. Could have been as good as Mark Noble one day.

Spurs owe him a lot.

Half way through Pochettino's first season it was all going wrong, the dressing room was supposedly split, Kaboul was captain, Adebayor vice captain, results were poor.

In response Pochettino binned off a big section of our squad, making Kane first choice striker, our central midfield for the second half of that season was two youth academy graduates, Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason. We finished 5th and got to the league cup final. Mason's desire and ability was a big part of that and we are still benefiting now. Hopefully he is able to return to Spurs in a coaching capacity one day.

I'm so glad he's alive and well but it is a real shame his career is over, I always thought he was a had a lot of technical ability. When he was on it he made our midfield tick in a way some of our expensive signings never could.

Shouldn't the Club or at least this forum send him an "all the best" message, tweet or whatever?
