No.

We're lucky there are some truly woeful clubs in the league this season. Most other seasons and we would be down.

Following the success of last season, we should have really pushed on cemented our place inside the top 10 and possibly top 7.

It's also been terrible off the field for obvious reasons. No season with what we've had off the field this season could be considered good if you ask me. Not unless there was a definite change in ethos from the top down, which we won't be able to tell until next season.

I know, it’s hypothetical. 8th would be a good season though?

Of course; any top half finish has to be described as good with the squad that we have

No.

It would just highlight that we could be trying to get alongside Arsenal and Chelsea if the owners had properly invested in the type of players we are bringing to the club.

Success of last season? Last season was a disaster.

I’d have bitten your hand off for potential top 10 back in October. We looked finished.

My mistake, I actually forgot last season as was thinking back to the last Boleyn season.

We are the worst run club in the league, 17th is pretty good

Ridiculous thread...

Seen as though others are entertaining it on this slow week though...

It would be an amazing end to a very poor season that would be looked back on as average overall.

Of course, finishing top 8 is decent for us and for me should be one of our aims from the start of each season.

- Can we get into the top ten (disappointing season if we don't)
- Can we make the top eight (decent season if we do)
- Can we get into Europe (great achievement)
- Can we get to a cup final / win a cup (great achievement)

For me, that is where we are at.

Yes.

If we won every game left this season, finished on 52 points and had put me on a run of seven wins in eight plus a draw at Stamford Bridge, that would constitute a good season. We will have ended up with the best performing team in our Premier League history. We could undeniably point to a well-balanced, high quality capable of consistently beating the best teams in the country.

But it’s not going to happen so this season will ultimately remain a failure.

8th would be good by our historic standards, yes.

That said, 6th to 10th should be the norm given the club's income and fanbase these days.

Anything below 10th is failure.

The creeping notion that 11th to 17th is some kind of success for a club like West Ham United is nonsense.

Merson was brilliant on this the other week talking about Burnley when it was put to him that staying up should mean they should ignore Europa League. " Is that what a footballer dreams of telling his grandchildren? We stayed up."

To win all our remaining games would be akin to Donald Trump being called a decent President. Just not going to happen. But going along with the spirit of the question, then yes finishing 8th would count as a successful season.

In absolute terms it would have to.

It would paper over a lot of cracks though and probably see an about turn on some of the recent “promises”.

The premier league is such a strange league that if you kept everything the same for beginning of 2018/19 as it is now (in terms of squads and managers), then it wouldnt be that surprising if the teams 7-20 now finished in complete reverse order next season!

Very small margins at play in terms of injuries, rub of the green, certain players on/off form, managers making slightly different decisions etc. There is little to choose between all 14 clubs in reality (you could argue Leicester and Everton a bit better, and Huddersfield a bit worse )

Vast majority of clubs will have as much chance of coming 7th -10th as 18th-20th

No. It would be complete luck if we did. We don't have a squad to compete with most of the teams that we have left to play.
