Football Agents scourge or needed?

Postby bristolhammerfc on Thu May 17, 2018 10:45 am

Was listening to Sky Sports News this morning where a manager was spouting about how bad agents are for the game and how top clubs could do away with agents today if they wanted. I then read this

https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... ssive-fees

Given the issues over the years with agents and our club, should the FA and premier League take the lead in regulating and restricting agent practice?

In relation to issues that have hurt the club I can think of:

Kia
Mark Curtis
Mark Redknapp

etc.

Thoughts

Interesting debate continuing.

The player has no clue what the agent is charging.

Shysters that are not needed. They exist merely to inflate player values, wages and of course their own cut.

Undoubtedly as the amount of money in football has increased they've been the biggest beneficiaries.

The supporters certainly haven't.

Agents should only be employed by players if they want one. They should NEVER be paid by clubs under any circumstances and those that to do should automatic points dedection.

Some of them are good, they look after their clients interests properly and do so for a reasonable fee.

Gary Lineker has done very nicely out of his agent - a long term relationship that has benefited all parties.

Roy Keane used to use a lawyer , Michael Kennedy to negotiate his deals, and it worked well for everyone.

Gary Neville by contrast used to do his own deals.

However it really is the wild west with many "agents" knowing sod all except how to make themselves a quick buck, and everyone loses but them.

Personally I think the FA and PL should mandate that all professionals have a nominated solicitor who partakes in all contract negotiations for a fixed fee .

That leaves the bulk of the money earned from the game with the player . How the player chooses to do deals away from his or her club is then a matter for them to decide.

i also know there was one agent , whose sole purpose was to get his clients a move every 2/3 years , ruined one player who was destined to be a star and despite playing for many top flight clubs , his career could be deemed a waste

Looking back at alleged interference by agents in terms of players.

I can remember that Titi Camara and Rigobert Song were both represented by Mark Redknapp and the money wasted from the Rio transfer resulted in Harry being sacked

Kia obviously costing us with Tevez and Mascherano

Curtis having a big influence in Sams time, especially with Ravel and Collison. In addition was instrumental in moving Tomkins on.

A selection of our current squad are represented as follows:

Antonio, Cresswell, Kouyate and Obiang (Unique Sports Management)

Cullen and Noble (Skillequal)

Carroll (Mark Curtis)

Collins and Hart (Stellar)

There's clearly a conflict of interest when an agent takes fees from all three parties in a transfer, the governing authorities should put a stop to this immediately. An agent should only represent a single party in any deal.

As things are at present it's little different from a protection racket.

Nice pub you've got here, shame if it burnt down.

Nice club you've got here, shame if nobody wanted to play for it.

why?
my firm uses headhunters for 'star players' and agencies for 'squad staff'. we pay them a percentage for their 'client' we would never charge the 'player' only his agent. Its the commercial world, why is football different?

i would rather see football money go the the fans before the players, the players before the agents, the agents before the owners, the owners before Sky/TV. But hey we don't live in a Utopian world.

They were needed at one point as players were being exploited. These days they seem to be the ones doing the exploiting!

I’m sure there are some good ones out there working in the best interests of their clients but others come across as nothing more than modern day slave traders who will place their wares with the highest bidder.

The most worrying aspect as a West Ham fan is that we seem to have replaced our scouting network with agent relationships. More short termism from the board when we need genuine investment in the infrastructure of the club.

With the money at stake I see nothing wrong with a player having representation, in fact it's probably vital nowadays, however I can't work out why an agent would be paid by the club representing a player plus the player himself. I would make it a law that an agent can only work for one side only in a transfer/ negotiation and only take one commission for that negotiation.
