I hope he learns quickly.

A poor match, away at an excellent Liverpool team isn't the place to judge him but there will need to be a massive improvement.

What gets me is the naivety- he is on top dollar and is supposed to be a tactician!

That's how he sets up his defence. It won't change. The players will have to get used to it. The midfield is a worry, Sanchez's performances will make the difference between a good or bad season imo

Always going to be a work in progress, especially with so many new faces. I wouldn't worry much. Today will have told him more than all the pre season friendlies. We still need to learn to keep the ball better, especially when we're under so much pressure. We gave it away stupidly so many times today. Need to learn how to calm the game down a bit.

I hope what pell leaned most was what bilic learned last season agaisnt newcastle away..when as per today rice got hooked at ht.

Dont ever ever pair rice and noble in midfield,

Really hope sanchez is up to it as midfield as per last 2 seasons looks very poor.

Do players 'learn' to keep the ball better? Maybe a lot of our players are just incapable of keeping the ball better? Seems like that anyway.

It’s like taking a decent A-level maths student and wanting them to do PhD level trigonometry- they might be willing, but they just cannot do it!

Pellegrini obviously has history of being a top manager, that is not in question.
But, if he had watched us play last season, or even asked within football circles, surely the need to strengthen the centre midfield would have been obvious.
It does not take a world class coach to spot this.
We’ve got some great attacking players but if you can’t win the midfield battle then we are going to see a repeat of last seasons struggles.

I was hugely disappointed to see him just sitting on his arse in the dug out all match. Did he ever leave it once to bark out a few instructions to the players? Is the norm for him ?

True, but his decline at Man City was marked, and he failed in China. Does a guy his age have the motivation and energy to rebuild the team?

Give him a break - he’s 64-years-old!

I doubt Pelligrini ever barks instructions.

It's going to take months (at least) until we can see what Pellegrini is about. Think about Pep and Klopp's first seasons, polar opposites to the city and scouse sides we see now.

He's going to need time but hopefully we can see a little more next weekend

We've been broken a long time, we aren't going to be fixed overnight. The manager needs time to get his tactics and ideas across, the players need time to gel and in most cases adapt to the league.

Confident that we'll be in a good place by the end of the season

Here’s hoping.
Just concerning signs that we don’t have adequate personnel in the key area that needed addressing since end of last season (and beyond that IMO)
Those words that everyone is beginning to loath ‘defensive midfield’
