Help, Chelsea Attendances (non WHU)

Postby Hammer.CA on Sun Jun 10, 2018 7:24 pm

I'm about to have a war of words with a Chelsea fan who now resides in the USA. He assures me that Chelsea's crowds never dipped in the '70's which most of us know to be complete pony. I remember a few posts on here quoting their 7000+ crowds but I can't find the website that gives the crowds for these games.
Thanks in advance, I hope. :eh:

Maybe try a bit harder with the words? Good luck anyway.

I was in the Shed for a 1978 game against Birmingham City and the attendance was 18k.

Late ‘70s their crowds were piss poor except for the big games when they all turned up (it’s not a modern phenomenon with them :) ) but as far as I remember there was only one that sunk as low as 7,000. Pretty sure it was against Southampton and in a relegation year for them.

Average attendance at UP in the 1985-86 season? My guess is around 20k. Football wasn’t a day out for the faint-hearted. Commitment and guile was needed.

Can't remember the exact year but it was either '82 or '83 and they had two gates of around 6,000 odd. Against Orient and Cambridge United. Many times around that era they pulled in around 10,000. Most fickle glory hunting supporters in the world.

As recently as 1994, Chelsea attracted just 8,923 to Stamford Bridge for a Premier League game against Coventry City not long after taking 34,000 to Wembley for an FA Cup semi-final against Luton Town.

Indeed, Chelsea’s smallest post-war crowd of 3,489 came in 1991, incidentally against Luton. It was in the Full Members Cup, mind you – also known as the Simod Cup and the Zenith Data Systems Cup during it’s brief, unglamorous lifespan.

West Ham, meanwhile managed to shepherd just 10,055 fans into Upton Park for the Carling Cup tie against Macclesfield in August 2008. High ticket prices and the team’s poor form were blamed.

Across the way at White Hart Lane, just 14,034 turned up to watch Tottenham beat Stoke City 2-1 in the same year – the club’s lowest league attendance for 50 years.

Blimey, looking at those stats.
Over a million in 1972 to less than half a mil in '76. Didn't get to over a million again until 2000!
'80's even worse than the '70's..

Chelsea got lucky with the Russian money. They'd probably be in the Championship now if Roman hadn't turned up.

I can remember the Bridge in the early to mid 80's being half empty. The stadium was a dump then as well.

"Stamford Bridge is falling down, falling down, failing down, Stamford Bridge is falling down, poor old Chelsea"

Those were the days :P

All clubs understated the actual attendance in those days - I don't imagine we were the only club that had two people squeezing through the turnstile, with you and the operator sharing the 'saving'. People could also bunk into grounds in those days.

On top of that I seriously believe clubs understated attendances for reasons that can be guessed at (this is IMO, of course as it can't be proved). Charlton away in '77: 70,000 capacity, the ground packed but reported as 32K.

Care to expand on that NBA ? I thought it was common knowledge that they were within a few hours of liquidation before the Russian mafia stepped in.

Aye. Didn't Abramovich buy the club for a pound?

They were in huge debt and had time limits placed on them, they had behaved like Risdale at Leeds, and taken out euroloans borrowing again future sale to develop the ground, they also owed the family of the late Mathew Harding and that too had a time limit on it, they were in trouble, and how they got the money they did considering that at the time was eye opening
