On top of that I seriously believe clubs understated attendances for reasons that can be guessed at (this is IMO, of course as it can't be proved). Charlton away in '77: 70,000 capacity, the ground packed but reported as 32K.

I know for a fact that Wembley attendances for some England games in the 80s were made up on the spot by FA people as I was in the room when the attendance was decided for a couple of matches. However, these were overstated, rather than understated, to make the figures less embarrassing for the FA.

Thanks all for the info, the bloke has started slagging West Ham off now to his West ham supporting mate (not me) who reminded him that he brought the subject up in the first place. :D

Hammer.CA.

Their gates dropped off a cliff in the early 80s, when they were in the second tier.

In the late 70s, their lowest was around 15,000 -17,000.

I'm pretty sure it was Ken Bates who brought them for £1. Back in 1982. That was the first time they nearly went under. So in effect Chelsea have had 3 sugar daddies since the early 80's. Bates, Matthew Harding and Abramovitch.

I often wonder how I would feel now if Roman had bought us instead (upgraded Upton Park to at least 41k) & we'd had all the success that Chelsea have had.
How about you?

To be fair I wouldn't call Ken Bates a sugar daddy, it was Hardings money that saved them. If I remember properly they couldn't even buy players in the last years of Bates' reign, if the Russian hadn't of stepped in god knows where they'd be today. Also Mid 70's after they built that 3 tiered stand, they were in bad trouble then, seriously in danger of going under.

Marler estates were the biggest issue Chelsea faced historically, they set up the CPO (Chelsea pitch owners to try and raise monies to own the ground from Marler estates , who were threatening to build on the bridge, similar to Fulham 2000 who had similar threats and actually invited us to the cottage for a fundraising game to help their fans group, I still have the programme somewhere

Mathew Harding was the best thing to happen to CFC, and he was a top fella too, very sad when he passed away, the Russian obviously did them huge favours

Yes I remember this. Wasn't there even an attempt to get them to ground share (Fulham/ Chelsea).?

We had 12000 for a first division fixture in 1985. Yes our great year. I was there and our gates grew and grew after but if we had had a poor season and McAvennie was a flop we could have had lower crowds. In fact I'm sure we only had 14000 as we beat Forest 4-2

It has to be remembered that gates were down everywhere at this time. Even Man United were only pulling in around 30,000 for some games. There was a real fear that football, as a major sport was 'dying'.
Having said that Chelsea's attendances have been notoriously fickle when they haven't been doing well.

Prior to the Russian, Chelsea were never as big as Arsenal or Spurs. Years and years of mediocrity with the odd cup run. Scruffy **** ground too.
