Mexico will have hosted the World Cup three times since we hosted it in 1966 and the USA twice! A World Cup with 42 teams, spread over thousands of miles and two countries where ‘soccer’ is about the fourth sport.
Enjoy this tournament in Russia because it will be the last one as we know it with Qatar next and then a North American shambles!

How have Mexico hosted it so many times? Are there specific regions that host it on rotation and Mexico are one of few in theirs?

I hope we as a country never offer to host it again personally.

In 86 I believe it was supposed to be in Columbia, but they were brassic and pulled out at the last minute, so Mexico stepped in to save the day.

Colombia dropped out in 82 as they couldn't afford to host it so the year after FIFA awarded it to Mexico despite Canada & the USA offering better bids.

Excellent article here on it:

How can the USA, with a President who wishes to alienate Mexico from any sort of meaningful existence, including the building of a wall, be able to effectively joint organise a World Cup.

I for one can't travel to Russia to put my hard earned into Putin's pocket.

Brazil and South Africa were too far away for a week or two, at the time.

It'll be much easier and pleasant to travel to Canada than most of the previous host nations.

And the Euros are so much more enjoyable 8-)

A fair amount of interest in Vancouver being a host city for a couple of matches.

Fair to say that our regional government and city politicians weren't that enthusiastic - nothing to do with not supporting football, cos it's big here . . . all to do with avoiding dealing with FIFA. After dealing with the IOC for the 2010 Winter Olympics there was absolutely no desire to enter into a contract with FIFA on FIFA's terms. So Vancouver said no.

Much like the Olympics, a lot less enthusiasm to host the finals these days. I can only wonder what sort of financial guarantees the US/Mexico/Canada bid team had to make to FIFA for the successful bid . . .

This was actually the sensible outcome. Unlike Morocco, not a single square inch of ground will need to be broken. It also has the benefits of being in multiple countries, which brings a new flavour to it, and has not really been done since 2002 in Japan/Korea. The tournament will also be expanded, which means that any country who wants to hold the tournament on its own will be expected to deliver much much more.

A sorbet to cleanse the palate after the appalling decision to host the tournament in Qatar, even though Morocco would have been more than able to serve the same purpose.

Because its football, not politics and anyway the wall will be supposedly to keep out illegals entering the USA.

I think she showed immense professionalism in not badgering the ref about the goalposts moving and the crappy boots she was given and demanding a re-take.

I guess all three countries will automatically qualify.

Can see Sturgeon and the SFA thinking a joint bid with us and the Irish may be a way for Scotland to make the finals again.
