Peanut sellers at West Ham

Postby poplargeezer on Tue Jul 03, 2018 4:12 pm

Do you remember the peanut sellers at Upton Park?

Guy used to walk around the edge of the pitch. People used to throw a sixpence (tanner bit) out from deep in the crowd and somehow their bag of peanuts was thrown back and people got their nuts.

A naughty thing to do was put your peanut shells in any strangers hoods of their anoraks if they happened to be standing in front of you. They would then get a shower of shells over them when they pulled their hoods up.

Also remember taunting Arsenal fans with '1-2-3-4, Can you hear the Arsenal roar?, Peanuts for sixpence'

Should they bring back the peanut sellers at the Brady stadium?

I'd imagine nut allergies would ensure they don't make a comeback.

I remember it well. Think the seller's name was Stan Kenton.

20p a bag as I remember.

As an aside in the photo journalism thread (snug?) there were some great evocative photos of the old East End. Percy Daltons featured at least twice including a poignant, depressing shot of one of their Jerry cans amongst a down and outs scene in Spitalfields which I seem to recall Percy Daltons has a link to.

If you wanted a snack in the middle of the chicken run there was no chance of getting out so peanuts were the only choice.

One of my first memories of Upton Park was the crunch of peanut shells under my feet.

Could this explain why (the last time I got a ticket for Chelsea away) John Terry was pelted with coins? (i.e. he was mistaken for the peanut seller)

I remember those days well. Though to be honest I could never really understand why peanuts were sold at football matches. Not really much of a snack are they ? :?

When I first started going there was a guy outside the main entrance selling hot chestnuts from a brazier.
Seemed to be doing quite a trade as well.
Can you imagine that on Olympic way, or whatever it's called?
