Set Piece Takers

Postby ai on Wed Jul 11, 2018 4:36 pm

By and large our set pieces weren’t that great last season, allowing licence to include our speculated signings who do you see as our set piece takers?

Assuming Payet is not coming as this will be a very repetitive thread. I imagine Noble will still take penalties if he’s playing, if not who?

Corners and in range free kicks hopefully one of the newbies?

I hate midfielders taking penalties, give it to the main striker, get his numbers up, I'd stick Arnie or Hernandez on pen duty.

Corners i'd imagine would be Fredericks and Cresswell/Masuaku, can't see us having a 6'3 lump in Yarmolenko not in the box at set pieces.

Chicharito and Yarmolenko have taken the most, Chicharito's record is pretty poor (interesting since he's one of the most efficient finishers in the world in the run of play) but Yarmolenko's is quite good.
Arnautovic has taken far fewer, but his conversion rate is good.

I'd assume if Noble isn't on it's Arnie or Yarmolenko who'll take the penalties.

I don't quite understand this. There is miles difference between a penalty and scoring from open play. Penalties are about composure and accuracy more than anything. Noble's PK record is one of the best in the league, for instance, and he's never been a huge danger from open play (despite scoring some cracking volleys).

If Noble is on, he needs to be taking the penalties. If he isn't, I think Arnie makes the most sense though apparently Yarmolenko is pretty good at them.

Penalties, Noble all day long, free kicks anyone but Noble. Always frustrates me how absolute garbage we are at set pieces. The pitch dimensions stay the same for the season so practising them should be a given. I think we have conceded more goals from attacking corners than scored from in the last couple of seasons!

Is Anderson a set piece specialist? How about Wilshere?

My initial thought was that we was pony on all set pieces which is not all true.

The premier league stats seems to suggest that we were middle of the road for corners with 7 goals scored but was gash at scoring goals from free kicks.

I agree Noble should leave free kicks alone and I’m not convinced by Cresswell either

The World Cup has shown how important getting your set pieces right is.

First thing we need to do is find someone that can take a decent corner eight times out of ten. Just missing the first man would be a decent starting place.

If he joins, I'd imagine Anderson, along with Yarmolenko, will take a lot of our free kicks.
