Pre-season tour (1966)

Postby hamstas_paradise on Wed Jul 11, 2018 5:36 pm

We often hear that players come home from tournaments tired and jaded for the new season..... here is what Moore, Hurst and Peters had to contend with, no break at all.....all three played in all the friendlies.

11th, 16th and 20th July - Group games:
Sat 23rd July: Qtr final:
Tues 26th July: semi final
Sat 30th July: Final
Sat 6th August: preseason friendly v Kaiserslauten
Wed 10th August: preseason friendly v Lausanne
Sat 13th August: preseason friendly v Karlsruhe
Sat 20th Aug: Div1 v Chelsea
...and 2 leagues games a week to Sept 7th Arsenal A, Leicester A, Arsenal H, Liverpool H, Man City A.

15 games in 60 days, almost all at the highest standard. they must have been knackered no wonder we were only mid table that season.

That brings back memories. Me and my brother went to the Fulham v Everton game. Finished 1-0 Everton. Prior to the match George Cohen, Alan Ball and Ray Wilson did a lap of honour. Can't remember why we were there instead of Upton Park. :?
