Potential Squad Numbers

Postby Hemel Iron on Sun Jul 15, 2018 4:37 pm

It may seem a little odd that we have now signed 7 new players, but only Wilshere has had a squad number confirmed.

I wonder if this is because other players are waiting on the possibility of departing players freeing up numbers?

Although with the recent injury news, it seems less likely some numbers will be freed up. Fredericks, Yarmolenko and Anderson wore 2,9 and 10 respectively for their previous clubs, so due to the situation with Reid, Carroll and Lanzini none of these will free up.

Balbuena wore 4 at Corinthians, this number is free, however I am told Diop wore 4 in the friendly. Yarmolenko wore the vacant 20, so this might be a clue.

Since Fabianski wore 1 for Swansea, it seems a bit odd that he hasn't been confirmed, since this is also available.

Hemel, you love a squad number thread if I remember correctly?! So do I, mind!

I expect they gave Wilshere 19 to try to appease us fans as it is Ginge’s number, same as when Dyer took Tevez’s 32.

They will wait for any outgoings I would think so the new signings can have more suitable numbers.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they did not give Fabianski the 1, so as to not upset Adrian - like they didn’t give it to Joe Hart when he signed and Randy left.

Wilshere wore 19 for Arsenal for years before he took number 10

I’d love to see Carroll stripped of number 9 he doesn’t play enough lol

I think the only reason Hart didn't take No1 was because he was on loan. I fully expect Fabianski to take the No1 shirt.

Diop wore No4 against Wycombe, so I reckon that'll stick, but I'm kinda banking on Snodgrass going so Anderson can have No11.

Been a while since we've had some success from that squad number, so it's due.

Carroll should be given 999.

If that was to happen I could see Anderson actually take 8 and Yarmolenko the 11.

Take Carroll off 9 as it’s silly him having it. Give it to whichever of the new lads fancies it.

Yarmolenko wore 20 on Sat. Of course, not confirmed - probably waiting to see what becomes available.

Hart chose 25 - I'm sure thet club would have let him wear #1 if he'd wanted to. Likewise, Wilshere chose #19 as he has worn it previously. I expect that they told him 10 wasn't available and wouldn't be any time soon and so that was his 2nd choice.

At the moment I'd say that 8, 11, 12, 14 are all possibles to become available in the next few weeks.

Numbers are now redundant. They no longer mean playing position. With the use of names on shirts now all is needed on the shorts is the player's initials for identification from the front. There was a time before them and there could be a time after them in the top leagues.

Never felt comfortable when Hurstie came out wearing number 9. To me he was no 10 and that's what he wore in all the "successful" matches! Now someone will tell me he wore no 9 v 1860 Munich!

Except they still have a massive impact from a marketing point of view, they are part of a players brand.

Just look at Ronaldo’s move to Juventus. Cuadrado given up the 7 to allow the winker to continue the CR7 brand and then very cleverly created his own by taking 49 - Cuadrado means squared - 7x7 = 49.

Pure genius.

I think they should give the first choice line-up numbers 1-11, and them keep that team for the entire season regardless of whether they are fit or not ... just like the good old days!!

friendly numbers mean nothing, ive seen players with actual squad numbers in the past wear random numbers in a friendly

id love to see Rice rewarded with a new contract and the number 4 shirt.. a number that is equally at home in the heart of defence or midfield just like Rice

Equally, I have seen friendlies where new players have worn seemingly random shirts which they ended up taking permanently, so I guess there is no argument either way.

Razvan Rat wearing 8 in friendlies seemed random, yet he ended up using it.
