Are there any stats for retaining possession from throw-ins? It's one of the areas I feel we need to improve.

Isn't it lovely to have 63% possession (against Burnley) and dominate games, we have been awful in possession for years, is 63% against Burnley our highest for the last few years?.

When we have 28% possession and we win, I tell everybody possession doesn't matter.........It's what you do with that possession.

When we have 68% possession and win, I tell everybody how very important possession is.

wish I had a quid/dollar for every time I have told one of my teams that.........(didn't seem to make much difference though).

:D

and D.C. - possession is a key but it's what you do with your possession that counts...

but it's hard to go a whole season in the minus column and not expect to be having a woeful season..

Leicester won the league without having majority possession most of their games. I'ts not what you do it's the way that you do it

When we finished so high a few season back wasnt most our games where we had like 30% of possession dont think much has changed really we just need to play counter attacking football more which is what we are good at

It's an interesting statistic, that like all others means nothing in isolation.

Imagine talking about just shots attempted with nothing else - we had 30 shots, they had one, now if theirs was a goal and none of ours hit the target it means nothing.

For possession you need to break it down to while winning/drawing/losing games can change dramatically, shots during those periods, shots conceeded etc all make it a funny, almost meaningless thing to discuss on its own. All the possession in the world whilst 1 down against a solid defensive team means nothing, against a counter attacking team it's probably the worst thing you can do.

That said you always feel better when your team has got the ball and is moving it about - not at the start of last season but generally.

Stats can show bizarre correlations between many things. My personal favourites are the strong link between the US consumption of cheese and the number of people who die by becoming entangled in their bed sheets, and how about the fact that increasing imports of Lemons into the US has dramatically reduced road deaths.

When we beat Arsenal 0-2 in the 2015/16 season we had 38% of possession
37% when we beat Liverpool 0-3

Leicester won the league and Sunderland only had worst Possession stats than them during that season

Our best possession stats that season was 67% v Leicester we lost 2-1 our worst Possession stats that season was 32% V Man City we won 2-1

These stats make perfect sense.

Last year we conceding a lot of goals from losing possession in stupid places and then being caught on the counter attack. All we did was pass it sideways most of the time which may improve possession stats but is misleading when we don't actually create chances.

If you have lots of possession and can deal with the situation when you lose possession you are less likely to concede. Our biggest issue for the last 2 seasons has been when we lose possession we are not set up correctly nor have had the right personnel to cope.

not only that, we lose possession in the stupidest places.....

the Brighton goal was one instance....that happened a lot last year too..........

when you lose possession in the attacking third you have 2/3rds of the field to adjust, get your shape back and generally not concede...

when you lose in your mid or defensive third, you can't recover quickly enough and usually at least give your opponents a chance to score as they only have 1/2 to 1/3rd of the field to go.....
