Summer Transfer Window - The Verdict

Postby -DL- on Thu Aug 09, 2018 5:14 pm

On paper, smashing business.

Every player an upgrade - and most importantly, as things stand, nobody that we didn't want to go has gone - and that is as important as the signings themselves.

Credit to the board, the manager and DoF - but they've (The Board) still got a long way to go to make amends.

Happy with THIS window as long as another non Premier League club doesn't come and snaffle up any of our non fringe players before 31st August! :scarfer: :crest:

Really, really pleased with this window. May take a while for them all to gel, but could be proper exciting!

Got to admit, I was worried that we would lose Arnie because of our spending but keeping Arnie is key to us having a good season, hats off to the Daves for once, only this once I am sure.

I think the real value of this window will only be seen in a year or two. Quite a few of our signings may take time to settle, and the squad time to settle with 10 new faces. It's great that Arnie is still here. We haven't lost anyone adding value to the first 11.

It's encouraging that the board have freed up funds and, it seems, backed off from transfer meddling (though I'm sure not entirely). Kudos to Pellegrini.

Now lets round it off by sorting Rice out with a nice long contract.

Great window. We have strengthened the squad and, as it currently stands, kept hold of our key players. Pleased that the key business was done early to allow the new players to settle in and get a full pre-season with Pellers. :crest:

Agree DL.

We kept our most valuable players and strengthened nearly every position for the most part. We've hit higher highs but rarely have we done so without the other shoe dropping of a sell off of a valuable player.

Overchuffed

Terrific window on paper, strengthened the playing squad depth, improved quality of the playing staff no question.

I hope all bought are all MP choices.

It was the window we were desperate for, filling out the squad with better quality which should push us up the table.

I hope this starts a new dynasty where we continue to buy quality in positions we need while keeping our best players.

Very happy with our business, time will tell if it has been a successful window but no complaints at all from me.

This all day long, I hope that this now comes a priority for those that hold the purse strings.

It's a lot of players to bed in and it's going to take some time, so patience is the order of the day.

I just hope this is indicative of us trying to be a more pro-active club on and off the pitch and it's the start of something. Fingers crossed, but the signs are good.

8/10

Pros
Pellegrini replacing Moyes
Good signings and spending (saved up?) money!
Upgrading outgoing players and filling most gaps.
Not selling Arnautovic

Cons
Maybe still a quality defensive midfielder short
Lanzini getting a long term injury
Gold and Sullivan (and Brady) are still in charge

Surprises
Snodgrass and Byram are still here
No loans - is this the first window under GSB that there have been 0 loans?

Would go further as to say this sets a benchmark to all interested ambitious players (and their greedy agents!) in future windows that West Ham is open for business on the world stage with a world class manager with ideas and ambition at the helm in a world class (Marmite for some) stadium.
I hope this is the end of bargain basement buying by directors, firefighting managers and hoof ball managers with nothing new tactically to add.
Happy to see us skin a couple of the Top six during the season and hopefully regular top ten finishes along with glorious cup runs in the future.
Which will inevitably lead the likes of City, Utd and Real Barca coming to us with their big wallets begging to sign our stars because they probably will whether we like it or not.
But if this the shape of things to come (and I never expected 10 in One window in my lifetime!) then the next world class manager of our club will be picking up wherever Pellers leaves off in finding the next Anderson's, Diop's & Silva's for the future.
Amen :scarfer:

A telling question would be, how would a squad made near exclusively of summer signings do against our team from last season?

Adrian
Rice Ogbonna Cresswell
Zabaleta Noble Obiang Masuaku
Mario Lanzini
Arnautovic

Vs

Fabianski
Fredericks Diop Balbuena Masuaku
Wilshere Sanchez
Yarmolenko Anderson Perez
Arnautovic

For me there’s only one winner and it’s the new boys. Will be an interesting season.

on paper a solid window for a change.

pros:
- MP/husillos
- seemed to have a plan on who to sign/dump and stick to it
- kept core of team
- got rid of kouyate
- GSB and twitter jack have kept their mouths shut for the most part
- no mention of crap like benteke, defoe, rhodes, austin, etc...
- window closing before season start is wonderful and we can concentrate on football now
- signed players early and had a full pre-season together even in a WC year

cons - would have like another midfielder to fill in for wilshire when he misses half the season
