2018/19 squad

Postby Up the Junction on Thu Aug 09, 2018 5:22 pm

We still look a little top-heavy towards the upper end, but it's a far more balanced squad.

We should have great strength in depth this year with players on the bench who can come on and make a real difference. I would imagine that next year's transfer window will see us look to replace the likes of Zabaleta, Snodgrass, Reid and Carroll with younger players.

2019 will see the end of Snodgrass, Zabaleta, Carroll and probably Reid.

If next summer we bring in replacements between the ages of 20 and 25 for those guys we'll all of a sudden have a much more youthful looking squad.

Doesn't look as bad when you see that 2 of the older ones are goalkeepers

Asked this in the transfer thread, but where's Nathan Holland? Thought he was being promoted to the first team squad this year (or maybe not quite ready yet)?

Also, Oxford's apparent ommission seems to speak volumes. Such a shame if it's a case of a twat agent poisoning a young player.

Wonder who will be the unlucky ones to miss out on an FA Cup winner's medal.

Does this mean half our bench won't be half full of youngsters I've never heard of?
Apart from fa Cup and league Cup benches I'm expecting 6 players on every bench that I'm excited to see coming on.
Excited to see a sub!!! At West ham

Can play anywhere across the front three. Depor used him as a left winger quite a lot last season and had him on all free kicks and corners, hence his so many assists/chances created.

Same goes for Yarmolenko really. Been used out on the right quite a lot, but can play through the middle too.

Worth noting that U21 players do not need to be included within the 25 man squad. So whilst it looks slightly loaded into the more experienced end of the squad, we can bring most of the "PL2" team in as well.

Obviously only half of these will actually be available once Rush Green gets hold of them all (and Manu is out for a long time). But yes, the thought of being able to throw some of the players in that 2nd XI at a game when we need something extra is great.

Assume we will need to ship Fernandes out to Fiorentina as we currently have 18 non home grown players. It is actually 19 if you include Martinez - who again will either have to be sent out on loan or just sit in the U23s.

If Byram goes out on loan to a Championship club, I assume Cullen will take his place in the squad to keep our home grown quota at 8. Players like Oxford and Holland do not have to be included in the squad as you can have as many under 21s as you like.

Are you counting Diop in the 18?

Yes, he is 21 - home grown rules state he needs to be under 21 on Jan 1st of this season.

Other option we have is to not include Lanzini until the January window. With Fernandes sent out on loan and Lanzini not registered, we can include Martinez.
