Last season's top boys:

9 Manuel Lanzini (23 points)
9 Marko Arnautovic (18 points)
7 Aaron Cresswell (22 points)

Thread here: Assists: 2017/18

West Ham 1-2 Bournemouth

Javier Hernandez, chasing a lovely through ball from Felipe Anderson, is brought down by Nathan Ake, who clips Hernandez's standing foot. Marko Arnautovic puts the ball on the spot and takes a lovely penalty. Hit low and hard to the left, Asmir Begovic goes the correct way but the penalty is too good, too well positioned right in the corner and West Ham lead.

Key contributions: Anderson

1 Javier Hernandez (2 points)
0 Felipe Anderson (1 point)

I enjoy this thread, cheers Leon.

I have to say, for all the criticism that Anderson has already received - he's playing lots of passes in the final third with the quality of the one that won the penalty. There were 3 or 4 other examples against Bournemouth where he split the defense with a reverse pass or a perfectly weighted threaded pass across his body.

anderson played a perfect ball into arnie who could've laid to off to him for a tap in instead of going for the glory himself. one of these two has escaped all criticism and the other has bore the brunt of it.

39min, Noble hit a superb ball over the top to Arnautovic and his first touch was class. He had Hernandez free for to his left steaming through but went for goal and wasted the chance.

45min, Zabaleta plays a quality ball into Arnautovic who has Anderson steaming down the left totally free. Arnautovic again opts to shoot and wastes the chance.

2-0 up at half time and it may have been a very different outcome.

Arsenal 3-1 West Ham

Felipe Anderson picks up the ball on the halfway line and runs with it. He feeds the ball to Arnautovic, who nutmegs the defender playing it back to Anderson. Arnie then picks it up again on the edge of the box and strikes low into the net.

Wimbledon 1-3 West Ham

Felipe Anderson squares the ball to Issa Diop, who takes a touch to control before firing an unstoppable drive into the bottom corner from outside the penalty area,

It's Diop's partner at the back who gives us the lead! Robert Snodgrass whipped in the corner and Angelo Ogbonna cushioned it into the net.

Arthur Masuaku supplies the pass after Wimbledon throw men forward in one final attack. Javier Hernandez rounds the keeper to send West Ham into round three.

Key contributions: none

2 Felipe Anderson (5 points)
1 Javier Hernandez (2 points)
1 Robert Snodgrass (2 points)
1 Arthur Masuaku (2 points)

Everton 1-3 West Ham

Andriy Yarmolenko's first Hammers goal opened the scoring, finishing off a slick counter that went from the halfway line to the net in three touches, Marko Arnautovic squaring for the Ukrainian after Pedro Obiang’s through-ball.

Yarmolenko got his second in the 31st minute with a fine curled effort from just inside the box after a Jordan Pickford error gave possession to Mark Noble.

But Marko Arnautovic ensured that run came to an end when he struck clinically after a one-two with Pedro Obiang, the Hammers again profiting on the break despite Everton's spirited start to the second half.

Leon, I appreciate that it was in fact a long sequence of decent play, but wasn't in fact Noble who chest-trapped and passed from the line to Obiang, who then progressed to the assist the third?

In short, is that a contribution?

Nope. Definitely Arnautovic who made key role and then scored.

They one-two it twice, bamboozling Everton, but Mark starts it.

That's what I meant, but, if its too distant from the goal, fair enough.

I have now watched it back, and you are completely correct. Noble was a key player in that move and, as you have correctly pointed out, it was he that gave Obiang the ball to create the goal.

Last update has been edited to reflect this. Cheers.

West Ham 8-0 Macclesfield

After a goalmouth scramble causes panic in the Macclesfiel defence, Grady Diangana wins possession for West Ham. Declan Rice picks up possession on the edge of the area and bursts into the box. His inch-perfect cross to the back post finds Michail Antonio on hand to head downwards into the net!

Robert Snodgrass scored his first three minutes later, tapping in on the goal line after Grady Diangana's shot had been saved.

Aaron Cresswell cuts the ball back and Lucas Perez volleys superbly into the corner for his first West Ham goal!

Declan Rice wins possession down the right and releases Michail Antonio. He squares for Robert Snodgrass. Ryan Fredericks collects from the scotsman and rockets the ball into the top corner from a tight angle!

Angelo Ogbonna times his run perfectly and heads in Robert Snodgrass' corner!

Ryan Fredericks carries the ball brilliantly into the area and squares to Robert Snodgrass who slides the ball home!

Grady Diangana carries the ball, plays a one-two with Joe Powell and calmly finishes past the keeper.

A goal made in the Academy! Joe Powell slides Grady Diangana through and the youngster slots past the keeper.

West Ham 3-1 Manchester United

After a superb through ball from Mark Nobe, Pablo Zabaleta escapes down the right, slides a ball across the goal and it's Felipe Anderson who comes running in to flick it coolly past the keeper.

After neat play from Issa Diop and Felipe Anderson, Andriy Yarmolenko cuts inside onto his left foot and shoots with power. Poor Victor Lindelof runs across the ball in an attempt to block it but it flicks up off his heel and bounces over David de Gea. Yarmolenko will try and claim it, but that was an own goal.

Mark Noble plays a sublime ball through the middle, picking out Marko Arnautovic's run in between the two centre-backs. He's clear in the box, one-on-one with David de Gea and slips it coolly to his left-hand side.

Key contributions: Noble (1st goal), Diop, Anderson (2nd goal), Zabaleta (3rd goal)

Leon

shouldn't Noble and Zaba be switched ? i.e. Zaba 1st goal, Noble 3rd ?

Or haven't I figured out how this thing works ??

A key contribution is the past before the assist, Noble played Zabaleta through.

Yeah. The player in bold gets the assist (2 points) and everyone else involved in creating the chance gets a key contribution (1 point).

cheers

I always read this thread but sometimes can't make head nor tale of it..

:?

I am probably old school...

assist - if you pass it to someone who scores directly
goal - speaks for itself...

nowt else...
