I assume that shots on target include shots blocked (if they look like they're goal bound).
Anyone know how many of those shots we had on Friday?
Am sure the BBC said our shot count was quite high.

Shots blocked are actually not counted as shots on target bizarrely.

We had 17 shots against Brighton.
7 off target.
6 blocked.
4 on target (Noble 29min, Yarmolenko 34min, Arnautovic 53min, and Antonio 73min - all four were very easy saves / straight into the keepers hands).

Let's look on the bright side - we're consistently creating chances, and had more than enough to beat Brighton. It's be a lot worse if Brighton had knocked one in and then we'd created nothing all game, like what normally happened last season when we went behind.

The reality is, as much as us not converting them is bad, the more opportunities in front of goal our players get the quicker they'll find their range and confidence and start banging them in regularly.

You sense that there's a game coming where we find our shooting boots against a team low on confidence and give them a thrashing.

be nice if the next is spurs on the 20th !

we created but apart from arnie who was likely to score for us ? no one else.
brighton did a job on yarmolenko by roughing him up and he didn't fancy it
they crwded arnie out
they identified Arthur and zaba as weak points.
midfield 3 didn't have the creativity needed
if hughton and brighton can do it a lot of teams will also.

just a shame we had nothing on the bench as perez and Antonio were poor.

Hernandez and carroll returning asap will help us have a stronger bench.

The top teams tend to play narrower which suits us. The lower teams tend to defend deeper and counter down the wings which exposes our weak points. We'd do better playing just a little deeper and attempting to draw the opposition out before hitting them at pace. If we'd have had masuaku and zabaleta playing deeper and narrower, they'd have struggled to create much. We'd benefit much more if one of our midfield three was capable of driving forward with pace.

Think you are giving Brighton far too much credit there. We had 17 shots to Brighton's 9... we created chances... we just didn't take them.

They are well drilled and set up as a single solid defensive unit first and foremost. We won't be the only team that struggles to break them down this season and that might be the single thing that keeps them up.

doesn't matter how many times each team took a shot sutts..

neither troubled the keeper at all......

don't mind if we have 2 or 22...if none of them force the keeper to make a save we ain't doing a great job...

at least in making a save, there's the possibility of a deflection as per last week, and/or a knock down for a tap in.

the only thing I remember inside the 6 was Arnie's shot - which has just showed up on NASA's satellite system..

(along with Ryad Mahrez's pen).

Hence me saying that the issue was not creating chances, but taking them.
We created enough to win the game. We had four tame efforts straight at the keeper and missed the target with two from just six yards out (Arnautovic and Balbuena) when it was actually easier to hit it.

What about Balbuena's header? Seemed harder to put that wide than on target!

Think that was deceptive, as the defender who is marking him does just enough to put him off and stop him from adjusting his body to shift his head on target. If he wasn't a central defender I'd be much more annoyed at him.

bubbles1966 has made the point over and over again...

we usually do okay with our attacking intent. we just give up too many goals, especially from set pieces I think he said...

it is hard to sort out shots conceded as I don't have a per game basis - the ones listed are averages so one game like this will inflate the shots taken whereas I would imagine that the Chelsea game saw that average drop dramatically.

I am really happy that we create so many chances - more of a worry if we didn't.

obviously the next most important steps is to convert.

it looks like we are scoring a goal a game - average.

worryingly is that only:

Southampton
Newcastle
Palace
Cardiff
Newcastle

are below us............

very important to start getting the ball into the net, no surprise there of course. we're only hitting about 30% of our shots on target...

other players HAVE to get on the score sheet, Noble, Anderson, Yarmo, Snodders, anyone really and it doesn't matter how...

Arnie NEVER looks short of confidence, sometimes to his detriment, other players in better positions, but as he is by far the only one to score for us regularly, perhaps we can't blame him..

forwards HAVE to have some sort of selfish streak, but now and again he has to involve others, whether or not they score isn't important right now...pretty soon they won't (subconsciously) even make those runs. or they will but much less frequently.

:D

I have never quite understood this yardstick.
There maybe plenty of reasons why a keeper didn't have a shot to save, maybe shots whistling past the post just wide, or even a large amount of last ditch blocked efforts.
The keeper didn't have a shot to save thing was never a reason to dismiss a performance.
Just my opinion of course.

maybe you misunderstood..

didn't condemn the performance at all.....

merely stating areas that I (and maybe others) feel could use improvement.

if you don't get many shots on target, you ain't going to score many, ergo you won't win many....

We gave up 15, 16 or 17 shots in all of our games up until Man Utd.

Man Utd we gave up 9.
Brighton we up up 9.

It has improved dramatically.

cheers mate..

now we have to score more than 1 goal a game on average...........

https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/29/Show ... d-West-Ham

not sure if I am reading it correctly but

Arnie has 3 shots a game average ??

but 0 in the 6 yard box ????

that needs to change or we need to get more people into the box - if I am interpreting the data right...

we are improving which is the main thing. our possession % has gone up and we pass the ball as opposed to hoofing it.
however we still concede most games. a cleansheet or two in a row would be so good for confidence.

our over reliance on arnie could bite us if injury or loss of form besets him.

Anderson is the one who is game by game getting better. I still want to see him take players on more and get in the box for a shot or be fouled for a penalty.

rice noble obiang don't offer much attacking wise and tus we are again over reliant on yarmolenko arnie and Anderson.

defence is coping but obvious areas of concern with fullbacks especially LB area
so far this season I would rate our first team
fabianski - good
zabaleta - good
diop - very good
balbuena - good
masuaka - average/poor
noble average
rice - very good
obiang - average
yarmolenko - average
arnie - very good
anderson good

others
perez - poor
antonio - poor
snodgrass - good
