Interesting read about the Castillo game in 1980.

Went some way to explaining the match experience of footballers. I mean they all must have been through training and youth games even under floodlights where you can hear everything being shouted from the touchline, but there's no crowd atmosphere as Brooking pointed out. It must make a diff if they know it's a crucial, competitive game and that's where it gets weird. Sort of shows how the mood of a crowd can affect how they play.

Didn't go to that one (obviously !) But I was at the first leg in Madrid. That had plenty of what you might call 'atmosphere'. And sadly a Hammer died out there.
Any one else on here who was there ?

Apparently Len Cearns came into the dressing room at half time and asked Johnny Lyall to ask the players to tone down the language as it could be heard around the ground ... the daft old git forgot there were probably just the tea lady there to hear it ...

There goes my Bobby Gould line :fsake:

On the game, I always thought that was some performance to win the tie in such unreal circumstances. Must have felt like a training game yet they found the gas in extra time to win comfortably in the end. Testimony to what a wonderful side we had.
