This weeks internationals

Postby Overchuffed on Thu Oct 11, 2018 8:07 pm

Can someone explain why the 4th official in the Wales v Spain game is Welsh?

I was surprised to see Anthony Taylor refereeing at first to be honest given the closeness of England and Wales. If he was to get injured, this game would end up being referees by a Welshman. Hardly fair?

Article about the England match in Croatia including interviews with Brooking and Parkes regarding the behind-closed-door match in the 1980/1 CWC.

James Rod's goal last night was an absolute wonder goal

Piatek scored again, this time on his international debut for Poland

The England game is being played behind closed doors tonight as punishment for Croatia, why are England being punished as well, then?

Somebody inscribed a swastika on the pitch, so this is the punishment FIFA have handed out to the Croatian FA. It is irrelevant who are their opponents this evening

I'm still not absolutely certain how this Nations League thingy works, other than there are a number of small leagues consisting of just four teams per group each playing for points. One imagines each team plays the others home and away and this match this evening is the home leg for Croatia against England

There are four leagues A B C and D.
Each league has four small groups within it 1, 2, 3 and 4.

England have been placed into the A league and were then drawn into Group 4 of that league along with with Spain and Croatia. The teams play home and away in a standard league format running through September, October and November.

The four Group winners from league A will advance to the Nations League Finals in June. This will involve a Semi Final and a Final.

The bottom placed team in the group will be relegated into League B along with the three other bottom placed teams in the three other League A groups. These teams will then be replaced by the winners of the four groups in League B and new groups will be drawn for the next Nations League (two years time).

For the teams in leagues B, C and D it is a straight forward promotion and relegation process with the winners going up and bottom placed team dropping down.

It gets a little confusing when you go into the detail about how the Nations League crosses over with the UEFA qualifying groups. Basically the winners of each group will contest the play off places (if they haven't already qualified) as opposed to it being for teams finishing 3rd in UEFA qualifying groups.

Nice summary Sutts

The other thing to note is that seeding for Euro and World Cup qualifying groups will now be assigned based on Nations League performance

So, if England come bottom of their mini-group and get 'relegated' to Tier B, they will not be amongst the top 12 seeds for Euro Champs qualifying, and thus likelihood of a harder group

Therefore, it does carry some degree of importance

How weird - will it still be televised? Would be great to watch an international game where you can hear everything said on the pitch & bench :)

Did Martin Tyler really just compare Dier and Henderson with Gerrard and Lampard...
