Good work, Dec. Don't listen to a word those other players tell you about how much better things are in Manchester, Liverpool, Tottenham etc. They're all lying.

Congrats Declan!

Side note over the England squad...

No Maddison?
Picking Delph?
Picking Winks?
Tripper over Wan-Bissaka?

Come on Gareth.

I wouldn't even want him at West Ham, but he plays for Man Utd so of course he gets selected.

A two match tournament is not the time to experiment.

Southgate is staying loyal to those players who got to world cup semi and then got England to this little tournament, and rightly so.

August and September will be the opportunity to make changes.

And for those calling for Maddison, he hasn't been in particularjy good form last couple of months anyway

I think Southgate's actually earned the right to stick with the players he wants.

Wan-Bissaka will come in eventually, but let's be honest, in Alexander-Arnold and Walker we have two quality right-backs anyway and Trippier will probably be fazed out slowly.

The players got us there, let them try and win it.

As, for the rest of your post, spot on, some clubs and chairmen have worked it out, others, haven't.

Dier must have something incriminating on someone at the FA

I know it is not fashionable to defend him, but Dier played in all the games that meant England qualified for this finals tournament, and played pretty well

It would be extremely harsh to not let him be part of the team trying to win it

Anyone else notice the number of West Ham youngsters who Ireland seem to be calling up into their international sides? Aside from Declan, there's obviously Josh Cullen (born in Westcliff), and also Conor Coventry and Louie Watson, who's just signed his first pro contract with us. No idea where the latter two were born but wouldn't be surprised if they're local lads, too.

Must be an overriding Irish strategy to hunt out youngsters with all the Prem sides who may have Irish heritage.

That's exactly what it is if memory serves, they literally hired someone to do just this. It's how they picked Rice.

What gets me is their angst when claiming we stole Rice from them. No self awareness at all. If you deliberately recruit a young player in his mid teens from another country you really can't get hacked off when the law as it is encourages them to rethink and change their mind when they realise they are headed for bigger things. Imagine if we had stolen him from them at 15 because he had an English Grandparent they would be objecting far more than they are now. Pure hypocrisy.

Rice has a lot to learn, says Neville

The man who only looked good because he had David Beckham playing in front of him criticises somebody who is going to be world class and who at 20 years old is better now than he ever was.

I can't stand Gary Neville, but he doesn't say anything that isn't unfair

International football is a completely different kettle of fish, and Declan is new to it. He wasn't helped by the formation on Thursday as it was all a bit cramped but it will take him a couple of years to adjust to the different pace and style

What England need, and have needed for years and years IMHO, is a player like Modric or De Jong playing at the base of the three. Players who are not only an anchor breaking up attacks but who can start them.

Do we have a player like that? Maybe Winks. that is who the pundits seem to think can play that role

Rice will be the specialist old skool DM anchor if Southgate wants to play with one, but i don't think he does moving forward

At the Euros I think we will see a midfield of either Rice, Winks and Henderson, or Winks, Henderson and one other [maybe RLC] - depending on how attacking Southgate wants it to be and how confident he is with his back four

EDIT - a fit and firing Jack Wilshire could be exactly what Southgate is looking for for the anchor role - probably the closest we have to 'a Modric'

that's kind of what I thought Crouchy.

big leap from playing for us in the PL to playing a very upcoming team in the Euro Nations thingy.

didn't come across as critical of him particularly - at least to me.
