Exporting to the SD card will work fine or backing up to your gmail account.

RARS - as well as exporting to your SD card - you should have your contacts automatically syncing with your gmail account - that way if you ever lose your phone you can simply resync them to a new phone. Also it's easier editing your contacts online rather than the phone.
