Vaaaaaaaaaaaaan Gaaaaaaal laments the fact he taught the Argentinian goalie how to save penalties :) Oh the irony.........

Van Gaal, who will begin his new job at Old Trafford after the tournament, also rued the intervention of Romero, who he signed in 2007 when he was coach of AZ Alkmaar.

Monaco keeper Romero, 27, spent two seasons playing under Van Gaal at the Dutch club before the coach left to join Bayern Munich.

"I taught Romero how to stop penalties, so that hurts," he said. "We were the club to bring him to Europe. He was a big talent, and someone who has the qualities to do that."

Dutch deserved to lose . . . a complete borefest cos they bottled it - completely uninventive.
They had the players to make this a good game, but the manager got his tactics ar*e-backwards. Wrong players - wrong tactics. Hope he does the same at bloody Man Yoo.

Was embarrassing to watch Kuyt on the right today - clueless. Every time he got the ball he tried to advance 20 yards, refused to take on his man, refused to use his left peg . . . stopped the ball and passed with his right. Argies were reading him like a book. Must have happened 15 times over.

The match was a disgrace to football. Looked like both teams were playing for the nil-nil draw.

If you think Jose Mourinho loves himself, wait til you start hearing pre/post match interviews from this fella. Manc Untd fans wont take to him. Especially if he dont have a good start.

Van Gaal taught their keeper how to dive left and right? The man IS a coaching genius. :thdn:

There's more to it than that; you have to (discreetly) judge which side the penalty-taker 'dresses' as this can influence the direction of their kick.

Because of most group stage games. Favourites pretty much won every game. All the quarters and semis were b*llocks and apart from a couple of good first knockout round games they were all turd as well.

Dull football has prevailed.

Ohhhh so that's what Tim Krul was doing in the semi when he was getting in their faces... He was giving their offal a gentle Vinnie Jones squeeze.

De Jong, rushed back and not fit.

Van Persie, injury concern before the game.

That's two almost certain subs that needed to be made. In a 120 minute game of high intensity football against a tenacious team like Argentina, the chances of you having a spare sub to piss around with your keeper at the end is very unlikely. Add into the mix that your attacking intent was practically non existent, penalties was a very real option.

Could he not have brought on Krul for Van Persie and put Cillessen up front for the last 20 minutes?

If they had won after that then everyone would be calling him a tactical genius!

Borefest is spot on. Whatever happened to wining the match in normal time. Or in extra time even, considering the seemingly overwhelming consensus that penalties are a lottery.

Why do coaches not see this? Why do they leave it to a toss of the coin to determine the match? Unbelievable.

There is no consensus that penalties are a lottery. They depend on a wide variety of psychological, technical and cultural factors.

That coaches continuously trot out this tired line is down to either their own ignorance or their unwillingness to discuss measures they have taken and do believe in, or of course to paper over failure.

I totally agree that penalties are anything but a lottery.
Last night was an excellent example of that. It seemed to me the Argy's were massive favourites to win the shoot out. Might not have been so obvious beforehand, but looking back at it, it was far from a coin toss. The Argy's were far superior in every aspect

The Dutch 'keeper had never saved a penalty in his professional career. The Argy 'keeper had plenty of experience of saving penalties (according to the commentary)...
The Dutch seemed affected by the occasion far more than the Argy's. There was so much more belief in the Argy's penalty takers - highlighted by the difference between the 2 CB's who took early penalties. Vlaar's looked like the penalty of an uncomfortable CB, weak, too close to the 'keeper, no confidence behind it. The Argy CB just runs up and leathers it as hard as he possibly could into the roof of the net....

The Dutch felt the need to start off with a CB who doesn't normally take penalties. The Argy's had Messi set the tone for them...
The Argy penalties were clinically placed, which shows the level of confidence from their penalty takers. Sneijder's weak, poorly placed penalty showed the difference in mental attitude between the two sides.

Nothing that happened in that shoot out suggested the Dutch were going to have a chance of winning it, and they didn't, so anything but a lottery imo

I don't necessarily agree with that. There is a difference between taking a penalty during the course of any given match and one where there are 5 each to be taken in quick succession?

That is where the problem lies. Having a penalty taken during the course of a match and missing it allows you at the very least to pull it back, but in that situation it becomes somewhat of a lottery where those pressures and technical factors you state are applied to both the taker of the penalty and the keeper that determines a final result irrespective of how well you played and/or who is the best side.

Essentially players and coaches et al are sweating over a result that could go either way. That is where the 'lottery' statement generally derives from in my opinion anyway.

My point was that teams should go all out to win the match during normal time(s), and therefore agree with your summation about coaches.

van gaal "genius sub" against costa rica backfired big time i think, putting even more pressure on cillessen on this occasion.

i agree if he was such a genius he would have made them playing better.

couldn't possibly foresee having to use all 3 subs in a 120 minutes game? :?
i know he didn't need to last game, but the opponent was slightly different, wasn't it?
