The Final: Germany v Argentina
Sunday 8pm (BST) at The Maracana
Available on BBC1, ITV and on the wireless.
After their demolition of Brazil, surely Germany must go in to the final as favourites... But will a moment of Messi magic drag his otherwise average team to victory?

You have money on Andreas Brehme scoring an 86th minute pen?
Messi looked to be limping near the end of the semi. Hopefully it was just a bit of cramp, as it would be a disaster for him (and the final itself) if he couldn't play a full part in it.

If Muller scores in this or plays very well has to go down as one of the best World Cup players ever, 12 games, 10 goals, from midfield/up top, all from a 24 year old with at least 2 more World Cups in him, sensational.

I agree. He's a sensational player. It's amazing how Bayern keep churning out world class after world class players from their youth set up.
Should put some money on him becoming the all-time goalscorer in WC history by the time he's done.
I think we should sign him. unproven at this level, but well worth a punt.

The game that will define Messi's career. A good performance and a win he's up there with Pele and Maradona. Runner up and he isn't
It's a simple as that imo

Germany for me...simply because I cannot stand to see that smug cheating c*** Maradonna's face should the Argies win.

I would quite like to see the Argies win, if only for it to dent Cristiano Ronaldo's ego a bit.
"So Cristiano, Messi dragged an average team to World Cup victory, but you couldn't do anywhere near the same with Portugal. Does this confirm once and for all that he is a far superior player to you?"

Re: The Final: Germany v Argentina
Argentina have a very strong defensive unit and can deploy limited numbers in attack relying on Messi's genius to unlock the door. It's worked against everyone other than Holland so far and Germany look more suspect at the back.
Germany on the other hand have their usual efficient competence in every position and perfect balance throughout the side. People keep going on about their lack of pace defensively yet it never costs them despite being willing to push numbers in to the attack.
I can't remember a game that was harder to legitimately pick a winner from but I follow the usual mantra to never bet against the Germans. However if Argentina score first I can see them shutting up shop very effectively.

You just know that Messi won't be allowed to just stroll forward unmarked as he has surprisingly been allowed to do by other teams in the lead up to these games. I found it amazing to watch him walking forward from the midfield most times while the ball was well forward and wide.
Tough one to call for me on the back of that demolition by Germany. I'd like to see the game decided in normal time though.

What about if he scores a hat trick and the Germans win 3-4 ?
Re: The Final: Germany v Argentina
To be fair although Argentina do seem pretty average for World Cup finalists they do still have much better players than Portugal. Plus Ronaldo was injured.AndyCarrollsBarber wrote:I would quite like to see the Argies win, if only for it to dent Cristiano Ronaldo's ego a bit.

Don't know about that, but I do think this will be 5 or 6 in the most one sided World Cup Final in history.WCpete wrote:Muller and Neuer. 7-1 to this lot, eh?
