Agreed. And a wonderful finish to do it.

Though if argentina had taken their chances they would have beaten them comfortably in 90 minutes. Germany are great ging fwds but their achiles heel is their lack of pace at the back and they are fourtunate they didnt get beat by someone exploiting that.

Really good WC, marred slightly by the soft referreeing - allowing far to many players to be blocked and bodychecked especially.

I wish they'd pension off Lawrenson as well. I had to watch the ITV coverage for the commentary - even Townsend is better than that imbecile. Obviously have to turn back during breaks to avoid Adrian Chiles and his collection of cretins, but still better than having Lawrenson and his leaden "humour" inflicted on me during the game

It is so weird watching football with German folk. They cheer their team relentlessly, but are so sympathetic towards those that they beat.

Bratwursts were 11/10 tonight.

In fairness, Low recognised that glaring weakness, took Mertesacker out and moved Boateng across and he ended up being arguably man of the match today. They got away with it against Algeria though for sure.

When you also consider he moved Lahm back to fullback, dropped Goetze early on etc you've got to concede that the bowl-cutted, euro-pornstar looking kraut played a blinder all the way through.....

Not a patch on our Sam though.

He still can't cure Ozil from his severe case of Arsenalitis. He looks 1/4 the player who lit up the WC in South Africa.

This time, Argentina only lost 1-0 to Germany. Back in S. Africa, they got stuffed by Germany 4-0 with Maradonuts in charge.

I think Argentina should have won that game, had the best chances. But i guess they paid the price for letting Messi dictate the squad together with the bondscoach. No Tevez because he and Messi don't like each other. Now they had to bring in that ponytailed idiot Palacio who missed one of the biggest chances of the game. Tevez would have burried that one.

Messi player of the tournament, and even more comical David Luiz in the team of the tournament voted by FIFA

Germany was the best team of the tournament so i can live with them winning it, allthough that defense of last night would have been in real trouble against the speed of Robben and the talent of Van Persie.

Is that the reason? I knew he hadn't played for Arg since 2011, but I assumed it was the manager who didn't like Tevez.

Was the right result in the end, but it was close enough to be thrilling. Weren't Arg clattering Schweinsteiger a bit to much near the end though. I think Neuer should have walked for that challenge and the look on his face afterwards showed he knew how lucky he was not to.

Well done the Krauts

I am off course not 100 % certain, but it has been discussed quite openly on our and also Dutch tv that Messi and Tevez had a falling out,and that Messi influenced the selection because he is their absolute superstar, and that the coach just went along with it.

Tevez on Messi:

“I don’t know where people come up with such nonsense,” he said. “I have a fantastic relationship with Messi."

People are just after him because he's the best player in the world. He wasn't the best player of the tournament, but he was definitely in the top 10. Argentina's system drains their attacking quality. Look at how badly Aguero, Higuain and Di Maria struggled. Messi scored 4 goals and created the most chances in the whole world cup, while being left alone and triple teamed. Only James Rodriguez, Robben, Kroos, Neuer and possibly Mascherano were better.

How was that not a red card on neuer?? Foul called on Higuain??
The referee bottled it. That was a point in the game that could have given Argentina the cup. If that sort of challenge had happened outside the area there would have been no hesitation by the ref to call a foul.
I don't think the Germans would have come back with 10 men and a goal down. Muller was at his diving best again. I don't get this German love in myself. If Higuain, Palacios and Messi had their shooting boots it would been all over.

To begin with, Tevez hadn't been producing the goods for Argentina, so I'm not sure he was the answer. Second, the reason he aws ****ed off was because his head got too big; Tevez thought he was "the people's chosen player" and bigger than the squad. In short, he threw a trantrum and ended up pissing everyone off.

I'm not sure what the call should have been, but certainly not a foul against Higuain. It looked horrible...

I think Höwedes' "tackle" in the first half should have been a red card (high, showing studs, on the inner thigh/knee). He got a yellow.

The Germans could have also had a penalty, as well as Argentina on one or two occasions. I suppose the ref was consistent in that regard -- consistently poor!

Argentina created the better chances, but Germany finished theirs -- and that's all there is to it in the end. I think the Argentine players gave their all and ran themselves into the ground. I couldn't ask for more.

It was always going to be difficult winning if the game passed 90 minutes (given Germany's superior fitness, extra day's rest, and stroll in the park against Brazil). I also think Sabella took Higuain and Lavezzi out too soon. Without Higuain we lost our reference up front. Palacio is not a no.9. Lavezzi offers a lot offensively as well as defensively. He should have never been subbed, let alone for Aguero who had a very poor showing this World Cup. When these changes went in, Sabella was already thinking about penalties in my opinion. We lost any attacking outlet/impetus we had.

All in all for the tournament, several factors just didn't go our way; Di Maria was playing poorly and then picked up an injury, Aguero wasn't fit and played poorly as he was in and out of injuries, Higuain was in poor form, and Messi didn't have much left in the tank. The attacking four never really clicked like they had in the past. What was a good counter attacking squad with a questionable defense in qualifiers became a toothless and dysfunctional-in-attack squad with a very solid and organized defense. Although I prefer attacking football, I think Sabella got his tactics right and adapted very well to the situation.
