An astounding stat:

8% of the Icelandic population are in France to cheer their team on.

While I know that they only have a tiny population, that is still pretty impressive, and definately must be a record. With Hungary next, they must be fancying themselves to get to the next stage!

Good luck Iceland!

I really like their chant, which was something like a collective war cry repeated every 5 seconds or so.

It sounded like something from a Nordic battle.

you twats cost me my 90quid treble of poland, germany and portugal

in all seriouness it was a terrible game. iceland just hoofed the ball and time wasted all game whilst portugal offered next to nothing in terms of creativity. i feel ronaldo plays too high and central for the national team. cant see them going very far in this comp to be honest.

Has Cristiano now officially taken Roberto Carlos' crown of being the most fraudulant free kick taker in the history of the game?

He was certainly a petulant arse after the game. Fancy Iceland trying to get a result in the game?

And that's why he'll never be a legend of the game once he hangs up his boots. He plays for the name on the back of the shirt, not the shirt itself.

Rather than be humble and shake the hands of his opponents, or acknowledge the Portuguese supporters, he just goes straight down the tunnel for a sulk.

Cristiano Ronaldo -

'' The way they celebrated at the end was unbelievable , Iceland don't try to play , they just defend , defend and defend , then they celebrate like they have won the Euros .
This in my opinion shows a small mentality . They are not going to do anything in this competition . ''

I was warming up to him until that point .... :)

Ronaldo may have been childish, but he's entitled to his opinion, if I generally feels Iceland were intent on just defending and defending, than they do have a small mentality. I disagree that they went just to defend but if you believe the did, the conclusion they have a small mentality follows logically. People on here on here accused BFS of having a small mentality for the same reason.

His attitude shouldn't be surprising really. He is used to playing in a team of superstars in a league where there are only 2 other fixtures you have to worry about. He's won the Champions League this season and for the 3rd time in his career.

He is used to winning and last night he only managed to draw against what are considered the weakest side in the tournament.

Neither are your lot on that showing. How fitting it would be for Portugal to get knocked out and Iceland make the last 16.

Personally I don't know that Iceland did purely defend. Perhaps at 1-1 but at 0-0 and 0-1 they were still impressing me and didn't look like they were there just to keep the score down.

Bigger picture though is that they would have seen Portugal as their toughest match of the tournament. By getting a draw against them they've given themselves a great foundation to go and try and get the additional points they need to go through. In this tournament were three or four points should be enough to see you through, getting one from your toughest game is a boost.

poor game, iceland defended very well and was well organized, portugal without ideas.

ronaldo spoke in frustration and exaggerated, but he's not that far off: iceland impressed me for their organization, getting back in numbers and quickly giving portugal no space, but certainly not for their flair or their attacking abilities.

I was delighted Iceland got their well deserved point, they could have even won it towards the end.

I don't understand why Ronaldo was always in the middle (I only saw the second half), from Portugal's point of view it would have been better with him on the wing creating something, it's not like he's never scored goals from a wide starting position.
