2018 World Cup - Dark Horses?

Postby Patito on Tue May 15, 2018 12:24 pm

Senegal for me.

- They don't have a particularly tough group.
- Plenty of pace and energy
- A very physical defence.
- I think they'll just have a go and play without fear.

Fair chance they’ll get Belgium in the second round which could do for them.

Struggling to pick a dark horse unless you count Belgium who shouldn’t be dark horses really.

Croatia

If they can defend, any team that has Modric, Rakitics, Brozovic, Kovacic, Persic, Manzdukic can definitely win games

Portugal don't concede many goals and if you don't concede many goals, you'll go quite a long way, but my money is on Uruguay. Watch out for them, coz they've got real quality. Probably, in Muslera, the best goalkeeper in the entire tournament, at the back, Diego Godin of Atletico Madrid. Terrific defenders in Jose Gimenez and Maxi Pereira, and a brilliant array of midfielders
and take your pick up front, Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani, Carlos Sanchez and Matias Vecino

Looking at their squad they've got a lot of quality Puff and you're right about Uruguay too, horrible, niggly side but they know how to win and have serious quality down their spine.

Not sure Portugal are going to be that good at the back, the defence in the final was Pepe and Fonte, Pepe is two years old and Fonte is finished.

Russia, without question, are going to win.

England???,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,No chance whatsoever. If England get to the 1/4 Finals they will have over-achieved. I hope I'm proved wrong but I don't think we're anywhere near good enough (AGAIN).

I disagree. Failing to get out the group and beating our Group H opponents in the second round would be underachieving imo. Quarter finals is par for me.

My Belgians definitely are going to be the dissapointment of the tournament. And the waste of the golden generation will be a fact after 2020. Because we had a dreadfull manager in Wilmots, replaced him with Martinez because the federation claimed not to have the money to invest in a real top manager (does that sound familiar?) . We played dreadfull football in one of the easiest qualification groups. The players refuse to play big nations before the tournament because they don't see the use and the utility in that . All the while, the Spains,Germany,France, Brasil continue to play each other to test themselves. Whenever this team came up against a somewhat decent opponent they lost, and they will go max a far as the quarters .

I think you're right. They're usually a good tournament team who play hard for their shirt. This year they have very good younger players in midfield plus strength throughout the side. I also rate Muslera since his Lazio days.
I also like Serbia as a dark horse although they would probably face the Germans in the second round. They've had some close games in the past plus they'll be supported by the Russian crowd so who knows?

Egypt can make the second round with Salah and Warda who was for me the best player in the Greek league.
