Hammers At The World Cup

Post by Collison Theory »

None of our players made the England squad, but there will still be a few of our boys to follow in Russia.

Cheikhou Kouyaté will be leading a decent Senegal team out in a competitive looking group against Poland, Colombia and Japan. With the likes of Sadio Mane and ex-Hammer Diafra Sakho in front of him, they'll be hopeful of making an impact and could face England in the second round.

Manuel Lanzini made it into the Argentina squad who will be hoping to get through their group without too much drama against Iceland, Nigeria and Croatia. With only three caps so far and strong attacking options, he will probably be back up. Teammate Pablo Zabaleta wasn't selected.

Javier Hernández already has a hundred caps and 49 goals for Mexico, making him their all time record scorer. Despite often being on the West Ham bench this season he'll still be hoping to lead the line against Germany, South Korea and Sweden. Whether he'll still be a West Ham player by the time the tournament starts remains to be seen, if he is he could well be looking to put himself in the shop window.

Edimilson Fernandes is in the 26 man Switzerland squad, and will be hoping to make the final 23 for games against Brazil, Costa Rica and Serbia. He only has three caps, but could be useful and versatile substitute, as he often is for his club.

João Mário might well soon be a permanent West Ham player after his loan last season from Inter Milan. He's well established in the Portugal squad, with 33 caps already, including the Euro 2016 final win against France. Portugal face Spain, Morocco and Iran.

A few to follow there, but for me it's going to be mainly about watching the big man leading out Senegal.

Lanzini's out, so there goes the reason to watch the World Cup

Fernandes didn't make it so 3, one of whom isn't even ours!
