Random world cup question

Post by griff123 »

Random question, but as Spain and Portugal both won their game 1-0, what happens if they both win their next game by same score? Who gets 1st and 2nd place?

My mate is assuming it's then based on cards, but what happens if that's also the same?

I think it will have to go to a play off group decider but it would certainly be a first if it is the way they decide it.

If the cards are the same, then it's down to the drawing of lots.

Judging by the games so far, I think that they should have a diving competition, with judges holding up their marks for artistic impression, technical merit and degree of difficulty.

For those old enough to remember, England beat Egypt 1-0 in their final group match in 1990. Had the game ended 1-1, then all four teams would have finished with identical records.

As it was, Ireland finished runners-up, ahead of The Netherlands, following the drawing of lots.

Apparently Spain are top of that group at the moment by virtue of having received fewer yellow cards.
