Terrible officiating, but high drama. Not even Shakespeare could write drama like this

You do wonder what impact this VAR b*llocks is going to have in a knockout game deeper into the tournament.

That penalty was farcical.

Really not sure about VAR being suited to football. Wastes so much sodding time. Maybe just the way it's used and the bad influence it's having on players (as ZAB is saying right now)

It will probably be functional in 10 years time. But the World Cup ain’t the place to test it out

I think VAR should've been introduced retrospectively to start with. Football has been allowed to get to ill disciplined to start it off live as it were.

Just seen the Iran penalty, how can VAR think that needs a 2nd look? and how can the Ref agree? Do they even know the laws of the game??

For the gazillionth time it’s NOT THE ACHING VAR!

The VAR is just a series of slow motion replays from different angles of an incident. If the referee reviews that footage and decides it’s a penalty then who’s fault is it....the technology itself or the referee for interpreting it badly?

I like it precisely because it exposes the referee’s incompetence (or otherwise). That clearly wasn’t an intentional handball and therefore not a penalty and the replays proved that.

The referee is a ****ing idiot. Not VAR’s fault.

Somerset and Faithless you are right, and so are the BBC pundits. It's quickly led to worse player behaviour in terms of play acting and badgering the ref and worse, a weak ref can feel forced into making bad decisions when they got it right first time

New rule, any Player, manager or coach doing that stupid VAR screen motion gets a Red Card.

Any fan doing it gets a finger snapped and a slap.

Of course it's not the technologies fault. It's the human element and the implementation that's at fault.

The point is that 3 VAR match officials reviewed that handball and then still decided it needed passing on to the Ref on the pitch. The on field ref is then presented with a replay and thinking what have i missed that those 3 have seen? Total incompetence that puts the Ref on the pitch under unnecessary pressure. That's 4 qualified refs that misinterpreted that footage.

It may expose it but does it expose it any more than the normal replays? If FIFA don't take action then it serves no purpose.

He should have got a red, it was violent conduct and the ref clearly saw it in the replays.

It's either a red card or no card.

I would love to ask the ref what was the yellow card for.

The ref was watching an awful long time and I think a decision was made for him to give the yellow other wise the worlds "greatest" would miss 3 games for violent conduct.

Maybe they could have a second VAR to check on the first VAR? You could have 10 match officials per.match.....they'll still get it wrong

I'm with you Ageing. Either a red, or nothing ... a yellow card is just bottling it.

THIS!! The VAR has already correctly sorted out a lot of poor decisions. And as for those who says it wastes time. No way.....it adds to the drama AND as for wasting time....talk to all those diving overacting drame queen wasters that the snipers have taken out!
