#47 England 0-1 Belgium ~ Group G

Post by Puff Daddy »

Had this been a knockout phase game, it would be the game of the tournament, an absolute belter, just like a top Premier League match. It still might, but expect many changes in line up, particularly from Bobby Brown shoes

Lukaku out for Belgium.

Play to win. Keep the momentum going. If we finish second then we’ll take solace in knowing we’re on the easier side of the draw.

I agree with Ian Wright. Rest the players that need a rest, play the players that need some game time.
This could be a terrible match..

Looking at the draw finishing second has to be an advantage, the names on the lower side are so much smaller.

Southgate claiming that we'll go for it. Maybe we will. Don't be a high-principled fool, just for the sake of it, though. Do what's best for winning the competition, whatever that may be.
What do we think Belgium are going to do?

Whoever gets Brazil in the q/f, will then face one of France, Argentina, Uruguay or Portugal in the semi...
Ffs, whoever gets to the final on that side of the draw will have definitely, earned it.

Kane could possibly win the Golden Boot in this game if Belgium decide to 'manage' their progress.
What are the odds on 0-0 in this match?

I'd play the "second team". The next match will be Monday or Tuesday and then the next one if we get through is 4 days later. Time to make use of what is a pretty decent squad and give the other players some game time as they are likely to be needed later if we do well.

It's not that long since we last played and so the first choice should be able to pick up pretty well from where they left off. We have a big advantage in having already qualified so lets take advantage of that.

Difficult choice for Southgate like he says we've not won a knockout match since 2006 so planning a route to the final is a bit early. That said 2nd place seems good to me ;)

1-1 with us picking up a couple of yellow cards and finishing runner up in our group.

As this match for all intense and purposes is a dead game, I just don't know how it will pan out. Nice to win the group. but certainly not a bad thing coming in 2nd looking at the possible fixtures.

I think today I would rest key players (said no after the panama game, momentum etc), Kane, Lingard, Henderson & Trippier, and bring Cahill in probably for Walker as he is on a yellow.

It's not a normal WC game for me this one, too many PL players that know each other, so any of the 23 squad can go do a job.

I was hoping Brazil doesn´t win its group, then this could have been a really superb match. Now I´m afraid, both teams want to finish 2nd.

I get the impression Brownshoes is angling for the runner-up spot, so we'll probably win this.

Would like to see Kane and Vardy up top together for once, see what they can do.

I see FIFA have warned the players about attempting to get bookings on purpose in order to finish second. That is nice, warn England (and Belgium) but allow the nonsense that was the France game, do nothing about blatant play acting and diving. Typical.

Play to win ... if Belgium are 'playing to lose' this game should be a piece of piss ........

I hope that Southgate is telling the players to keep this game in perspective.

After all, we have already qualified.

We should take advantage of that - possibly resting one or two players if needed - and remember that the most important thing is to maintain the relaxed, measured, positive mood that has been fostered by Southgate. If we fixate on the result of this game, we risk losing that relaxed atmosphere in the camp.

A win, a draw, or a narrow loss against Belgium should not dictate how we do in this tournament. Just keep things in perspective and move into the next round with the long-game in mind.
