Agree. Silly rule. Might as well just commit the foul, give a pen away and hope for the best.

It's actually a good rule. The ref just needs to determine that it's a genuine attempt to win the ball... In this instance I don't think it was, defender knew he was getting the legs and the referee got that wrong I think.

Yes he did and got a Red Card and a penalty was awarded which is what the law says happens in that situation
