#56 England 1-1 Colombia (Eng win 4-3 pens) - Round of 16

Post by Puff Daddy »

A word of disquiet. Has anybody stopped to think Colombia may also believe they are in the easier part of the draw?

I doubt there are many sides that particularly welcome playing against a full strength England, with all our best attackers featuring, especially Kane. But we’re still a big scalp and most of the remaining sides would fancy their chances, I suppose.

Really could go either way, this one. Just hope we put a good performance on and play at our best - not much you can ask.

Big scalp  We've won one knockout game in 12 years

Head says it is a 50/50 game, our defence is very poor and if James is fit, him and Quintero will be supplying Falcao, Cuardrado against Ashley Young gives me kittens, he will probably murder him. Biggest problem is goals from open play, we're not going to score from corners so freely after playing two teams that could barely understand the concept of marking or assault in the box. Columbia are a bit like us, so they have weaknesses that we can exploit, if Alli plays he could be key as they will be all over Kane but the space just inbehind is prime for seconds balls and knock days and hopefully Ali can strike them home. Mina was awful at Barcelona but been solid for Columbia so far, got to test him.

Heart says we win 2-0 and celebrate long into the night.

Course we’re still a scalp. We’re a second-tier international side, but it’s still a big deal when we’re beaten, especially by someone ostensibly lower-ranked.

I have no doubt that they believe that, Puff & they are right to.
It's a shame that Pickford worries us all, so much.
'Jordan Pickford, World Cup winner', can we even imagine, reading that?
Would love it, absolutely love it for him to become a shot-stopping hero for us.

Horrible feeling we are going to get done 1-0.
IF we win this, I think we will win the World Cup.

The 'easy watch' has gone out of it now.
Now it's fingernail-chewing, pain or prolonged glory on Tuesday night & angry or happy, Wednesday morning.
Just think, no Germany, no Argentina, no Portugal left in the comp...
I do realise though, that they have not been those countries of the past & all 3 deserved to go out.
One of the main things I ask for against Columbia is that defensively, we don't allow them to take unopposed shots from around the box. Stop all shots coming in, in the first place. Far easier said than done, I know..
No more of that, 'we are England & we can always afford to give the other team chances because it's what we do, they'll probably miss & because we can go on to beat anyone'.
Gotta be ruthless now.

Enlighten me, who are the tier 1 international sides?

Germany, Brazil, Italy, for sure. Can make arguments for Argentina, Spain and France, too, at least in terms of the fact you typically expect them to do well at tournament finals. Par for that lot is 5, maybe 6 matches.

Par for us is 4 matches.

We could not really ask for a better chance than this to make the semis, but this is England, we will find a way to shoot ourselves in the foot.

Watching that recent documentary about the England managers, think it was called the impossible job, there can`t have been a more unlucky, or self destructive team than us in international football.

In world cups and euro championships we have had penalty defeats to Germany (2), Argentina and Portugal, goalkeeping howlers from Rob Green, Scott Carson and Joe Hart, key sending offs, metatarsals and assorted injuries , plus managers who insisted on taking unfit favourites, and shoehorning them into the team regardless.

So you are basing tier on history rather than current ability. Just wanted to check.

Record, expectation, form. Those things combined. Most nations have their peaks and troughs. Our peaks are not at the level of those other nations I listed, illustrated by our 2 SF appearances in majors since 66.

No Country has been outstanding , every team seems to have its weaknesses and strengths - Croatia have impressed me but they've been as dirty as anyone I've seen in a World Cup - France have been made co-favourites after yesterday's win over Argentina but they've struggled earlier on - I've yet to watch Brazil but I'll be watching them against Mexico as our son has put Mexican banners around our living room :) .

I think England have just as much chance as anyone .

I may well be mixing England up with West Ham, carnage.
Trouble is, England have always reminded me of West Ham.

Mostly in the sense that unless we're two goals up before the sixty minute mark you feel that we're just about to implode. The cricket team is the same: we snatch defeat from the jaws of victory better than any other nation.
