I’d play him. He frightens the opposition and creates space. If he could score that would be great.

For the national team, it’s about the above that makes him so important

After Pickford, he was MOTM for me

Football is not always about just scoring

:? :? :?

Harry McGuire was immense.......Walker did his usual pass to the opposition early doors but we got away with it...

Other than have pace, what exactly did Sterling do that made him runner up MotM for you ?

Honest....

I am at a loss to see what contributions he made to us winning today ????

And am happier than the proverbial porcine in excrement that we won...not trying to nitpick...

I thought Sterling was good today. Yes, he should have scored but he never stopped running. He never stopped showing for the ball.

Jas

running is the very least required of any footballer, let alone in a W.C. 1/4 final........that's twice he's been 2 - 6 yards out and failed to finish with only the g.k. to beat....

He should have scored before half time, let's not forget he was offside for the first chance. For me he was better than Alli, Rashford, Kane, Young, Linngard and Henderson.

He wasn't aware he was offside for that, close call....

24 passes only...above only Kane, Dier, Delph and Rashford...crosses 2 accurate 0 shots 2 accurate 0

If Southgate thinks he does enough, I will go with it...comes a time though when..............

Cuenca - nowt wrong with nitpicking anyway - we’re still in the WC so it’s all that matters anyway

I thought he was key in running their rigid 4-4-2 system ragged before HT, and along with Lingard, did a magnificent job of holding on to the ball intelligently after the second goal.

He pulls players away from Kane and consistently runs at players, something you can see his teammates love him for.

The 0 goals situation is somewhat of a psychological thing, and I’m of the opinion that when he scores, it will be more than the 1.

I don’t see why anyone would expect Southgate, who has got EVERYTHING right, including a penalty shoot out win and England into a semi final, to be wrong about these things.

Rocketron, it’s the same as counting off one one hundred, two on hundred etc. For whatever reason we like to count one Mississippi, two Mississippi etc when counting something down. Maybe it’s just me.

^^^^^^

Like I said mate, Gareth gets my full support......he picks the team and hasn't put a foot hardly wrong so far..even down to the u-21's where he was outstanding...

can't help but scratch my head though............bit like Slav and Moyes at times, I puzzled at the selection and why the subs usually took so long to make....

It's the quality of his runs and what it does to the opposition that counts and even getting into the position to miss is a plus. Would you have rated him higher if he hadn't got the chances to miss because I'd have rated him lower?

I sometimes think we see different games as I don't understand how you can't see he had a good game today. Yes in some previous games he hasn't been so good but today he was.

No mate..made no difference ..I have said that Alli, Lingaard didn't play well either but Alli scored...both have to create at the very least, chances for Kane.

Neither did. Sterling's run don't create space for others. His end product in terms of crosses, conversions, creative passes, through balls, etc. were non existent.

He probably got credited for one pass to Kane that in fact the ball was too far ahead of him and Kane nicked it off his toe and took the shot.

what other chances/crosses/through balls did his provide ??

I have included the link to Whoscored.com and you can take a look at them.

Other than pace, he offers nothing and benefits imvho playing for Citeh when Aguero, Jesus, David Silva et al provide him with chances and/or De Bruyne can pick out a pass.

On the England team we have none of those and his "deficiencies" show up.

All opinions..I respect others who disagree....

(however wrong they may be)

I've always used a Mississippi as my second timer - never set foot in the US of A.

This where I'm at with Sterling now. The one thing I'll say about his runs is that they tire out the opposition and his closing down applies pressure. It would be great if he could add finishing and passing to his game though
