#63 England v Belgium ~ 3rd /4th place match thread
This is usually a dreadful match, really nothing to play for, but a word of caution for the winners, traditionally, they don't normally qualify for the next one

Absolutely detest these. Teams should just treat them as a joke so FIFA knock them on the head.
Butland and Pickford up front. Vardy in goal.
I can't even remember the 1990 result and who we played.

You can bet Harry Kane will want to play, just in case England get awarded a penalty.

I think Gareth should let the second XI play this one. Butland and Pope to play 45 mins each so that every player can say they got a game. Welbeck, Vardy, Loftus-Cheek and Rashford as the front four; Rose and Alexander-Arnold as wing-backs, Cahill, Jones and whoever else can be arsed at the back.

Players should let the goalies have a f*** about up top. Let it end up 12 all.

Are you even made to train for a game like this? Waste of time...
Re: 3rd /4th place match thread ~ England v Belgium
This will be another non match i think between us.
Our players are devastated , it's sinking in they blown the opportunity to become World Champion.
For Belgium maybe the once in a lifetime opportunity. Think there is more future potential in this young English team. 1 or 2 players away from having a top top top team ( a De Bruyne like player in your midfield i guess)

I remember that game, players laughing and joking with each other.clawhammer wrote: We lost to Italy.
It was like a testimonial where the hosts had to win.

Completely pointless match. I'm actually out at the theatre when this match is on so will miss it but couldn't care less, if it had been one of the "proper" matches I'd have cancelled whatever I had on but this has less importance than a pre tournament friendly.
Definitely give the squad players a chance, the result doesn't matter.

A goal for Kane and the golden Boot, and finally a goal for Sterling!
3rd place...our best result since 1966.

You could make them into an animated GIF and store them on a floppy disk if previous ones are anything to go by!Samba wrote:Really can't see me watching this one.

Re: 3rd /4th place match thread ~ England v Belgium
I am curious to see how Southgate approaches this game.
On one hand, it is a pointless match, so why bother trying; just give the other players a run-out.
On the other hand there is: the Golden Boot contest between Lukaku and Kane; a chance to place our highest since 66; prove that we could have beaten Belgium the first time (if we had wanted to); restore a bit confidence in the lads and finish with a win.
My feeling is that Gareth will be thinking about the latter scenario.
Personally, I don't like matches that are not played with 100% commitment to win and wouldn't want to see the match being treated as a joke (even if it is).
