Re: England's 2018 World Cup performance; in retrospect
In retrospect, yes, it does sound ridiculous.
The actual performance against Croatia perhaps however demonstrated that they weren't quite the match for the best teams. And that they knew it.
They are young and there's no reason to think that, with development, they could go one step, or even two, further next time.
A different perspective, maybe. Nonsense, if you want.

We were at least the equal of Croatia for 45 minutes, who in turn were put on the back foot in the final due to a horrendous penalty decision.

I don't think Croatia were a completely better team than us.
In midfield certainly, and when they made that show second half it became clear we either didn't have the manager or the squad to counter that.
The positives are our squad is young and we will likely improve next tournament, so long as they players maintain the same ethic.

We were their equals, or similar, for less than 50% of the match.

The world and it's mother knew that we landed in the piss easy half of the draw.carnage wrote:We ended up playing teams who knocked out teams we didn’t want to play against. That doesn’t make it an easier route.
The results and performances were to par. There wasn't a single surprise result involving England.

Beating Colombia & Sweden was a HUGE surprise.bubbles1966 wrote:There wasn't a single surprise result involving England.

Beating teams that we usually labour to an uninspiring draw against was definitely a huge surprise, as was sticking 6 past Panama.

Panama were a pub team, while Sweden were full of players who would barely scrape a living in the championship - hardly Henrik Larsson,Ljungberg, Ibrahimovic.
