THE SUN - Cristiano Ronaldo blasted boss Alex Ferguson's tactics as Manchester United became victims of a Euro Messi-cre. Also: Chelsea are locked in talks to sign Bayern Munich ace Franck Ribery for £43million.

DAILY STAR - Manchester United's Champions League dreams ended in heartbreak last night as they were outclassed by Barcelona. Also: Sunderland have struck a £200million jackpot after billionaire backer Ellis Short sealed his Stadium of Light takeover.

MIRROR - Magical Lionel Messi ended Manchester United's dream of back-to-back Champions League final triumphs last night.

DAILY MAIL - Manchester United's dream of a second successive Champions League triumph was laid to waste by the genius of Lionel Messi.

DAILY EXPRESS - It was Lionel Messi one, Cristiano Ronaldo nil as Barcelona gave Manchester United a brutal football lesson to win the Champions League final in Rome last night. Also: Andrew Flintoff has lost his fight to be fit for the ICC World Twenty20 after failing to recover from knee surgery.

THE TIMES - Sir Alex Ferguson's dream of becoming the first manager to retain the Champions League perished last night at the hands of an outstanding Barcelona team who made history of their own. Also: Carlo Ancelotti's indiscretion will not cost him the opportunity of managing Chelsea despite the AC Milan coach's disclosure of many of the working practices of Roman Abramovich.

THE TELEGRAPH - Manchester United's dreams of becoming the first club to retain the Champions League, and Sir Alex Ferguson's hopes of becoming only the second manager to win the European Cup three times, were burnt out in the heady heat of an exhilarating display by Barcelona as Ferguson was left to rue the fact that too many of his big-name players failed to perform on the night.

THE INDEPENDENT - You cruel men of Rome: or rather a Barcelona team who reduced the best of the Premier League to a pile of rubble. Also: Steve Bruce remains Sunderland's preferred option as their new manager but Wigan Athletic's £5m compensation claim has created an element of doubt about his move to Wearside.

THE GUARDIAN - It really did turn out to be an unforgettable final. Also: Sacha Gaydamak, the owner of Portsmouth, has accepted an offer to buy the club from Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim, the Dubai-born businessman who came to prominence when he fronted the takeover of Manchester City last August

So Manchester United's date with destiny turned out to be a monumental let down where, to borrow a metaphor from Ian Holloway, they didn't even come close to getting her in the cab, and instead had to watch as a much more attractive and skilled adversary walked away with the prize on their arm.

And if United thought the beating was over with the final whistle in the Olympic Stadium, they can think again, as the fourth estate's collective assessment of last night, splashed across front and back pages alike, is brutally honest and every bit as comprehensive as the beating handed out by Barcelona - United simply weren't good enough.

"Not just beaten, but battered," reports the Mirror. "Battered to a pulp. Battered senseless. Battered so that the pain and anguish may never be forgotten."

That paper, in common with most, riffs on the Roman theme to tell how United were left as 'ruined' as many of the eternal city's most famous sights.

Over at the Sun, the assessment is no less blunt. There can be no complaints, they say, with United "not just beaten but played off the park by a Barcelona team superior in every department."

The majesty of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and the final insult of a headed goal from Lionel Messi, the world's best and last night's shortest player, after Samuel Eto'o had given Barcelona a 10th minute lead against the run of play, is drooled over in the English press.

And rightly so, as, according to the Times, United were "outclassed by an outstanding Barcelona team - a group of players who showed what grace, elegance and class of the highest order still exists beyond the Elysian fields of the Premier League."

Even the Daily Star, natural tub-thumpers for all things English, admitted that our champions were second best on the night, with there being "no shame" in losing to the exceptional Catalans.

In fairness, United themselves were, to a man, quick to acknowledge the quality of their opponents and unwilling to try and find excuses elsewhere. Well, almost.

A number of papers lead with Cristiano Ronaldo's comments that at the root of the rout was a mistake by Sir Alex Ferguson, and the Portuguese's ambiguous statements over his future that has left open once more the possibility of him leaving.

Though with the only realistic destination being Real Madrid, you might wonder just why the Portuguese would want to go through this at least twice a year in La Liga.

"We didn't do well," concedes Ronaldo, in words that are printed widely. "The tactics were not good and everything went wrong for us.

"We were only in it for 10 minutes and we never found ourselves again."

Asked the inevitable question about his future at Old Trafford in the raw moments after the game, Ronaldo said: "I don't know."

What is a certainty is that, after the little Argentine outshone his Portuguese rival for the mantle of world's best player, scoring his first goal against English opposition while Ronaldo still searches for his against a team from Spain, the pre-match debate over whom of Ronaldo and Messi is superior found a pretty compelling answer.

"This was the night when Ronaldo handed over his crown as World Football of the Year to a genius who has magic in his boots," insist the Star, and it is difficult to disagree.

United's other leading light, Wayne Rooney, had a quiet game, too. And as the post mortem gathers pace the Times believe that that, as much as Ronaldo's off-night, was to blame.

Ronaldo cannot be expected to win games alone and Rooney was too often to be found fighting fires in his own half rather than surging forward to ask questions of a makeshift Barcelona defence, ravaged by injury and suspension.

"[O]ne of the greatest attacking talents on the planet was modelling his game on Park Ji Sung," is their withering assessment.

Xavi and Iniesta ran the show on a night when Barcelona became the first Spanish team to win La Liga, the Copa Del Rey and the European Cup - and all in rookie coach Pep Guardiola's first season in charge.

Those three receive the lion's share of the plaudits from the English press though the temptation to focus on Messi was too great from some.

"Humbled!" shout the Mail. "Tiny Messi soars over dismal United...just call it the Head of God."

The last word should go to Ferguson, who was graceful and dignified in defeat, if a little shell-shocked.

"It was disappointing and we were beaten by the better team," said Ferguson half an hour after the final whistle.

"There were some disappointing performances but the individuals will recognise that themselves. It is difficult to put your finger on every part of the game but it just didn't go right for us on the night."

So at least United did win something then, Ferguson claiming the understatement of evening by some distance.

- Arab tycoon Sulaman Al-Fahim has agreed a £60 million buy-out of Portsmouth - and is set to put manager Paul Hart on an Apprentice-style trial. (Mirror)

- Owen Coyle is poised to pledge his future to Burnley and take himself out of the running to become the next Celtic manager. (Times)

Quote of the day:

Wayne Rooney sums up last night's events in Rome better than anyone: "They deserved to win. I've never played against a better team than this Barcelona. They're a brilliant team."

That article's jumped the gun a bit by saying Collison's been 'ignored' by England. He's only just come into our team.

West Ham and Wigan are on alert as Boro youngster Matthew Bates indicated that he intends to leave Middlesbrough this summer.

The 22yr old who was one of the shining lights in what was a poor season for the Teessiders is out of contract at the end of the month and is refusing to join the likes of David Wheater in committing his future to the club, despite dropping down to the Championship.

Bates, who has been linked with a move to West Ham and Wigan since January is determined to carry on his trade in Premier League, as the last thing he believes he needs is to be playing in the second tier of English football.

"I'm a footballer and I've missed a lot of football despite being just 22.

"The last thing I really want to do is play in the Championship.

"I want to play Premier League football and progress as far as I can but I'm also a massive Boro fan and I want to help them.

"There's a big decision to be made." (Sun)

Cheers CH

As expected the vultures are circling over the relegated sides as their prized assets are stripped.
WBA & Boro will have no chance of a quick return if they loose their best players.

I do know about his antics on that game but my opinion is based on seeing him on the box (never seen him live unfortunately)

Has some super tricks and lighting feet. I'm not sure what someone of his physical strength would give to teams like Bolton or Blackburn though, doesn't seem to be the sort of player that would fit in either side.
