That's a different transfer. Spurs didn't have £20m. Liverpool didn't want the player.

So the price is dictated by the level of demand and cash in the market - not the time of year.............

Had Keane stayed at Spurs last summer and gone to Liverpool in Jan, Spurs would have demanded more than £20m for him. Clubs do not like selling players who are in their teams mid-season. Of course demand and cash available is a factor, as in all transfers.

Example - if we kept Bellamy, he would have gone for less than £14m this summer, barring any mental scoring spree between Jan and now.

LEYTON ORIENT WANT WEST HAM STAR
ABOVE: One of the Hammers's hottest youngsters could join the team

LEYTON ORIENT want to sign West Ham starlet Anthony Edgar on a season-long loan.

The 18-year-old cousin of Spurs striker Jermain Defoe is rated as one of the hottest prospects at the Hammers’ Academy.

Glenn Johnson was supposedly available for about 8-9 million in January. He has just been sold for £17 million.

Stewart Downing has just been sold for around the same price as wanted in January in spite of relegation...

Age, length of contract, the number of interested buyers, current fitness level, the balance of the squad, the financial situation of both the buying and selling club are all much more important factors than the time of year.

In fact, the summer - as a time of stability and guaranteed income - is more likely to generate spending throughout the whole market.

The threat of relegation in January is just as likely to suppress spending (as clubs fear entering financial commitments they can't honour) as trigger it.

The actions of a small number of relegation threatened clubs (the odd occasion that a "big" club is down there) shouldn't be taken as indicative of the whole market.
