Red herring? Could West Ham really turn to former boss Harold Redwanker?

Roger and out? New Hammer Johnson has been relegated three years in a row

West Ham crisis sees Harold Redwanker installed as favourite to replace manager Sam Allardyce

Harold Redkwanker is the bookies' favourite to succeed Sam Allardyce - even though West Ham’s owners have publicly backed their under-fire boss.

David Gold and David Sullivan took the unusual step of issuing a statement on Monday morning confirming their intention to stand by their manager - as reported in Mirror Sport last week.

It said: “We know Sam has not lost his ambition or desire and is committed to making West Ham United a great Premier League club.

“Make no mistake, we are under no illusions as to the seriousness of our current predicament in the Premier League.

“But on the Board we have a combined talent of running football clubs and we will draw on all of our nous to get West Ham United out of this situation.”

That has not stopped the bookmakers making 66-year-old Redwanker - in line for promotion with QPR - odds-on for a shock return to Upton Park.

Besiktas chief Slaven Bilic, a former Upton Park hero, is also in the picture along with ex-Cardiff boss Malky Mackay.

The Hammers have won just one of their last 13 Premier League games with the club sitting second from bottom.

The east Londoners are anxious to retain their top-flight status and consolidate ahead of a move to the Olympic Stadium. As such they have prioritised their League games, starting at Cardiff on Saturday, over the cup competitions.

But following widespread fan anger at the 5-0 humiliation for a shadow side in the FA Cup at Championship Nottingham Forest, Gold and Sullivan have promised an improved showing in against Manchester City on Wednesday in the first leg of a Capital One Cup semi-final.

They added: “Many key players are out injured and Sam has been handed a near impossible task of coming through three crucial games in the space of six days with a squad of only 14 fit and available senior players.

“This is not an excuse it is a fact. We know Sam has not lost his ambition or desire and is committed to making West Ham United a great Premier League Club.

“We now face a Capital One Cup semi-final on Wednesday followed by a vital Barclays Premier League trip to Cardiff on Saturday.

“Despite an extremely difficult draw, we are determined to do all we can to get to the Capital One Cup final over two legs with Manchester City.

“We hope to have several of our missing players back in time for Cardiff and we go there knowing that a win can get us out of the bottom three.

“Such is the nature of the Premier League this season; there are only six points between us and the team in 13th place.”

West Ham have Andy Carroll, Ricardo Vaz Te, James Tomkins, James Collins, Winston Reid and Mark Noble all out through injury. Skipper Kevin Nolan is suspended after being sent off at Fulham - his second red card within a month.

The Hammers have moved to solve their defensive crisis by snapping up Wolves defender Roger Johnson - who has been relegated in each of the last three seasons - on loan.

Johnson, 30, has been on loan at Championship soide Sheffield Wednesday after suffering the drop twice with Wolves and before that with Birmingham.

Allardyce is also keen on Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott after seeing a move for Everton centre-half Johnny Heitinga collapse last week.

A loan deal for Monaco’s 6ft 6in striker Lacina Traore is also close, pending a work permit.

West Ham are still hopeful of a deal for another forward - either Everton’s Nikica Jelavic or former Sunderland star Asamoah Gyan, currently at UAE club Al Ain.

French club Marseille claim they have turned down an offer for striker André-Pierre Gignac, who has scored eight league goals this season.

We revealed the Hammers’ interest in Gignac earlier this season.

The frontman has 18 months left on his contract, with Fulham also interested, but Marseille chairman Vincent Labrune said: We have been subject to a fairly large bid from an English club which we rejected.”

Redwanker parted company with the Irons 13 years ago, after a bust-up with then-chairman Terry Brown.

He has since led Portsmouth into the Premier League and to FA Cup Final triumph, and also took charge at struggling Filth in 2008 and steered them into the Champions League.

Manager's backing: West Ham's co-owners David Gold (L) and David Sullivan believe Allardyce will put things right

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce backed by Hammers' joint chairmen in open letter to fans on club website

Sam Allardyce has been handed the backing of West Ham's co-chairmen David Gold and David Sullivan, who have acknowledged the "near impossible task" he has faced.

Allardyce is the only manager at one of the Premier League's bottom five who was in place at the start of the season, and speculation surrounding the 59-year-old's future has been rife in recent weeks.

And after a youthful Hammers side fell apart in the FA Cup on Sunday - losing 5-0 at second tier Nottingham Forest - Sullivan and Gold have taken to the club's official website to offer their support for the ex-Bolton and Blackburn boss.

"We know Sam has not lost his ambition or desire and is committed to making West Ham United a great Premier League club," the open letter read.

"Sam has been handed a near impossible task of coming through three crucial games in the space of six days with a squad of only 14 fit and available senior players.

"We have experienced difficult times before and we know what will get us results – hard work, determination and perseverance. To that end, we are all working round the clock to do everything in our powers to help arrest our slump in form."

The Hammers have slumped to 19th in the table, following a recent run of form which has seen them lose seven of their last 10 league matches.

In the letter Sullivan and Gold revealed that they are close to providing Allardyce with more players, whilst they also believe that their current crop of crocked talent start returning to action will ensure things are soon made easier.

"Our first priority is to get our key players fit," the letter continued.

"Our record signing Andy Carroll continues to make good progress following his return to first-team training and he should be back on the pitch very soon …Trust us, Andy Carroll is desperate to play and is ready to do his bit for the team and we are confident that the return of all of our injured players will lead to an upturn in our fortunes.

"Thereafter, our second priority is to bring in the new talent needed to bolster our squad in the most needed areas.

"January is not an easy time to do business but we are pleased to confirm we are close to securing one of our key striking targets. A defender is high on the list of priorities as well and progress is being made on that front.

"We understand these are difficult times for the Club and its supporters, but we must stay united and come through the other side together.

"Please support us and the team - we have no desire to be where we are and we are all doing everything in our power to improve this unenviable situation."

Countdown: Carlton Cole's West Ham deal expires next week

West Ham's Carlton Cole to be offered transfer to Queens Park Rangers on an 18-month contract

QPR boss Harold Redwanker is hoping he can pinch Carlton Cole - by offering him a longer deal than West Ham do.

Former England striker Cole's short-term contract at the Hammers expires next week and they are only likely to offer him an extension until the end of the season.

But Redwanker, desperate to improve his goal-shy strike-force and keep Rangers' Championship promotion push on the rails, is hoping an 18-month contract will help persuade Cole to move to Loftus Road.

The west Londoners are also eyeing Croatia striker Nikica Jelavic, whose two goals for Everton helped knock them out of the FA Cup at Goodison on Saturday.

Incoming: Central defender Roger Johnson (right) has been signed as West Ham battle relegation

Roger and out? Allardyce's new signing Johnson has been relegated three times in
a row

If the vote of confidence from West Ham’s owners was not bad enough for manager Sam Allardyce, he has also acquired a player who has been relegated in each of his last three seasons.

Co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold released an open letter in which they acknowledged the manager had to field a young and inexperienced team in a 5-0 FA Cup defeat at Nottingham Forest.

They also vowed to sign players in January and started with Roger Johnson, who has been relegated in each of his last three seasons and has moved to Upton Park from Wolverhampton Wanderers until the end of the season.

Allardyce, never the most popular manager at Upton Park, is under intense scrutiny. Two wins in 13 games culminated in the humiliation at Forest on Sunday, yet his side are in a Capital One Cup semi-final, with important players nearing fitness and the promise of more signings to follow Johnson.

Giant Ivorian striker Lacina Traore is supposed to be on his way if a work permit can be secured next week. Traore has a deal to join Monaco from Anzhi Makhachkala in the summer and permission from the French club to spend the next six months at West Ham.

The Hammers also enquired on Monday about Wolves keeper Wayne Hennessey and could snatch him from the clutches of Crystal Palace, who have yet to agree a fee for him.

Sullivan and Gold, in an open letter to supporters on Monday, said Allardyce had only 14 fit senior players for three games, starting at Forest, and accepted his reasons for selecting a young side.

Roger Johnson's unwanted treble

2010-11: Birmingham are relegated after finishing 18th in the Premier League, with 39 points from 38 games.

‘Like all West Ham supporters we feel frustrated and hurt by our recent results,’ said the letter. ‘We understand how you feel and we, the Board, feel the same.’

They thanked fans for their loyal support, no doubt aware of their growing discontent, but stopped short of offering to compensate the 3,000 who travelled to the City Ground — apart from one young boy caught sobbing on camera, who has been invited to watch a game from the Upton Park directors’ box.

Instead, they said: ‘Many key players are out injured and Sam has been handed a near impossible task of coming through three crucial games in the space of six days with a squad of only 14 fit and available senior players.

‘We know Sam has not lost his ambition or desire and is committed to making West Ham United a great Premier League club.’

Johnson, 30, has spent the last three months on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, who wanted to extend the deal before West Ham stepped in after they failed to lure John Heitinga from Everton or Manchester City’s Joleon Lescott. He is expected to join the squad for the semi-final first leg at City on Wednesday.

Johnson won the trophy with Birmingham in 2011 but has not played in the top flight for 18 months. It is not a signing to assuage concerns of fans, and former West Ham striker Tony Cottee said he feared the worst.

‘The alarm bells were ringing before the Forest game and they’re ringing even louder now,’ he said. ‘A lot of things went on against Forest that I wasn’t happy with. The 3,000 who went weren’t happy.
Elusive: Johnny Heitinga (left) and Joleon Lescott (right) both escaped West Ham's clutches

‘There will be 6,000 at City demanding the team put in a performance. It’s not always about the result. It’s about 100 per cent effort and giving something back to fans.’

Between the semi-final legs, West Ham travel to Cardiff for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first game as a Barclays Premier League manager and face Newcastle at home.

But the board have earmarked the home games against Norwich, Southampton and Hull in February as key to the season and promised a ‘much-improved squad’ by then.

Andy Carroll, Mark Noble, Winston Reid, James Collins and James Tomkins are expected to be back from injury and Kevin Nolan should be available after his ban.

Gold and Sullivan said in their open letter: ‘We have experienced difficult times before and we know what will get results — hard work, determination and perseverance. We are working round the clock to do everything in our powers to help arrest our slump in form.

‘Our second priority is to bring in the new talent needed. January is not an easy time to do business but we are pleased to confirm we are close to securing one of our key striking targets.’

Rickie Lambert

Lambert links with West Ham go on

WHENEVER he has been asked about his long-term future, Rickie Lambert has always stated his desire to end his playing career at Southampton.

That may yet happen, but speculation linking him with a move to West Ham this month is not going away.

Time will tell if it is merely agent talk, but, in an open letter supporting manager Sam Allardyce in the wake of West Ham’s 5-0 FA Cup defeat at Nottingham Forest, the club’s owners have fuelled the Lambert rumours by revealing: “January is not an easy time to do business but we are pleased to confirm we are close to securing one of our key striking targets.”

Lambert would be the perfect fit for Allardyce’s relegation-threatened team.

A skilful, goalscoring target man, he could do for West Ham what Kevin Davies did for a decade at Bolton Wanderers, after Big Sam signed him from Saints.

And, crucially, the regular first-team football that Lambert would get in the absence of the injured Andy Carroll, would give him a better chance of scoring the goals he needs to make England’s World Cup squad. But selling Lambert now is the sort of dilemma likely to polarise opinion amongst the Saints support. The pragmatists in favour will point to the fact that Lambert is 32 next month and the sort of player who needs to be playing week in, week out to be at peak fitness.

While the hip injury that forced him off after 35 minutes of the win against Burnley is not thought to be serious, it was a reminder that he is not getting any younger.

So, with Lambert under contract till 2016, Saints may be tempted to cash in now, rather than see his value depreciate.

A replacement would be needed, but with Jay Rodriguez capable of playing as an out-and-out striker and Sam Gallagher pushing for a place, Saints already have options in the absence of the suspended Dani Osvaldo. If Saints decide to sell their much-loved No. 7, they will surely wait until Osvaldo serves the rest of his three-match ban, against West Brom and Sunderland, in the next 11 days.

But, while there is no room for sentiment in football, and Lambert has not hit the heights of last season, he has three goals in his last four starts.

The romantics amongst the Saints support will be distraught if Lambert goes this month.

Players care little for statistics but Lambert still needs one league goal to join a seven-man pantheon with 100 or more, including the likes of Mick Channon, Matt Le Tissier and Terry Paine, which would cement his place as a club legend.

So would winning the FA Cup, which Lambert dreams of doing with the club he has scored 110 goals for in all competitions since his arrival in August 2009.

After being given another home tie against lower-league opposition in the fourth round, Saints have an excellent chance of going all the way and having some silverware to show for the progress made over the last five years, other than the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Winning the FA Cup would breed more confidence, help attract more players this summer and see the current team confirm this as an exciting new era by emulating the achievements of 1976. It would also provide Lambert with the opportunity to go out on a high or the chance to fulfil another dream – playing European football.

SUCCESSOR? Harold Redwanker

Harold Redwanker in at Hammers?

Upton Park legend Redwanker, who played for the club and managed them for seven years up to 2001, was last night installed as the bookies’ favourite to return, with Allardyce effectively given a few weeks to save his job.

Allardyce has been publicly backed by Hammers owners David Sullivan and David Gold and given the go-ahead to strengthen his squad. Wolves defender Roger Johnson has signed on loan – and will go straight into the line-up for

tomorrow’s Capital One Cup semi-final first leg at Manchester City – with Ivory Coast striker Lacina Traore due to complete a similar deal from Monaco.

The Daily Express understands that Redwanker will be the chief contender if Allardyce fails to survive.

The 66-year-old is becoming disillusioned with QPR and would welcome a return to east London.

TIME TO FIGHT: Cottee believes Big Sam needs to start getting results fast

West Ham legend Tony Cottee: Make or break time for Sam Allardyce

TONY COTTEE says the next six games are make or break for Sam Allardyce AND West Ham.

The Hammers legend believes January will determine not just Allardyce's position as manager, but the future of the club for years to come.

Big Sam is under pressure with his side struggling to stay in the Premier League and humiliated in the FA Cup by Championship side Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Ex-striker Cottee fears for his old club if they go down, especially with a planned move to the Olympic Stadium on the cards in 2015.

Boyhood Irons fan Cottee says their results in their next few games and the business Allardyce does in the transfer market could either save them or spell disaster.

The former striker said: "There are six games in January. They will determine where West Ham are going to be playing next season and Big Sam's future as well.

"It's about results. It doesn't matter if they are rubbish 1-0 wins. January is basically a really critical month for West Ham.

"West Ham have been given a great opportunity by going to the Olympic Stadium, but they need to be in the Premier League.

"If you are in the Championship, you'll be playing in front of 20,000 to 22,000 in a half-empty stadium. There would be a vital loss of income you get with the Premier League.

"In fact, it's probably the most important month for years. There is a lot at stake."

“The club have done the right thing, to back Sam at the moment. But they have to get results”
Tony Cottee

West Ham fans are fuming after they were dumped out of the cup at Forest 5-0 as Allardyce sent a young and inexperienced team to the slaughter.

The club's owners issued a vote of confidence yesterday.

And Allardyce has a chance to atone in the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg at Manchester City tomorrow.

Cottee fears the fans will be in uproar though if they are hammered again.

He said: "The alarm bells were ringing before the Forest game and they are ringing even louder now. If we get stuffed by Man City on Wednesday, they will be ringing even louder.

"If they don't get results for the rest of this month, it will be a full-blown crisis.

"The club have done the right thing, to back Sam at the moment. But they have to get results.

"We can't keep blaming injuries and suspensions, or we were unlucky or whatever. The bottom line is you have to get results."

Cottee, who scored 115 goals in 279 league games for West Ham, reckons it is essential the club trade wisely in January after they made a hash of it in the summer.

Injured England international Andy Carroll has not played a game for the Hammers this season, despite costing a club-record £15m.

"There were big mistakes made in the last window and they have to put that right," Cottee said.

"They have to bring players in. One or two strikers have got to come into the club and a couple of defenders as well.

"There's not a lot of money around, but they have to get players out and get players in."

Allardyce yesterday snapped up Wolves defender Roger Johnson on loan until the end of the season.

Johnson went down two divisions with Wolves and also suffered top-flight relegation with Birmingham.

But despite seeing his arrival as a bad omen, Cottee, 48, is hopeful the centre-back arrives at Upton Park with a point to prove.

"Roger has experience of battling against relegation is another way to look at it," Cottee said.

"I always felt there was a good player in there. He's maybe lost his way a bit, but that happens when you get relegated and you're in a team that is losing games.

"He's English and Sam likes British players. Hopefully Sam will put his arm around him and tell him how great he is and he'll perform as he potentially can. It's a good chance for Roger to prove himself."

FAVOURITE SON: Harold Redwanker could be tasked with saving West Ham's season

QPR boss Harold Redknapp set for shock West Ham return

HARRY REDwanker has emerged as a shock contender to replace Sam Allardyce as West Ham manager.

The Hammers’ joint-chairmen, David Gold and David Sullivan, are backing Allardyce and gave their boss a vote of confidence yesterday.

But they also know angry fans are cranking up the pressure – and they may be forced to act if Allardyce can’t turn things around soon.

QPR boss Redwanker is the shock name in the frame to succeed him if he is sacked.

“We must stay united and come through together”
West Ham statement

The odds on the 66-year-old making a West Ham comeback have tumbled in recent weeks, with Redwanker now the clear favourite.

Former Upton Park favourite, current Besiktas boss Slaven Bilic, and ex-Cardiff chief Malky Mackay have also been mooted.

Redwanker left West Ham in May 2001 after seven years in charge.

But Gold and Sullivan have backed Big Sam, despite the 5-0 FA Cup thrashing at Nottingham Forest.

They told fans: “We must stay united and come through together.

“Sam has been handed a near impossible task of coming through three crucial games in six days with only 14 fit and available senior players.”

An ill advised move by the West Ham board

David Gold David Sullivan Karren BradyThe response by David Gold and David Sullivan was as predictable as it could be. What else were they going to say in the circumstances? They clearly have no intention of calling time on what increasingly appears to be a lame-duck tenure, probably mindful of the huge pay-out that would be required given Sam Allardyce’s incredible salary that they were responsible for negotiating. It is in essence a masked vote of confidence in their man.

The board really appear to be ignorant of the fact that a huge swathe of the fan base are truly sick and tired of appalling, negative performances, a lack of alternative playing styles once the route one method was well and truly scuppered by Andy Carroll’s lengthy absence, and a non-stop list of excuses whereby it appears to be everyones’ fault except the man who is in sole charge, who has bought the players he wanted to fit his rather Neanderthal style, and who most worryingly appears to have been unable to use any clearly defined tactical nous when combatting more adventurous and attack minded management teams. The lack of a counteracting strategy during matches has been clearly evident leading many to question Allardyce’s ability to effectively coach and set up teams in play.

It is also widely felt amongst the fans that the youngsters were in effect hung out to dry against a decent Nottingham Forest side, and that a couple more old heads could have been utilised to assist the youngsters in what was always going to be a difficult fixture. Again the board have sanctioned his team selection, but surely they couldn’t have expected such a demoralising and frankly embarrassing display against the Championship outfit.

The letter commences “We know Sam has not lost his ambition or desire and is committed to making West Ham United a great Premier League club.” As with players, a huge basic salary can often dilute the urgency and passion needed at this level, and one wonders whether the current boss has become a little too cosy and well re-numerated to really feel the pain that Hammers fans are feeling at this time, and have been feeling for the past few months as they have watched the side sleepwalk into the relegation zone, despite mutterings from the managers office that all is well, and that things will improve when big Andy returns.

Looking at Sam Allardyce from my seat close to the dugout on home match days, it has become clear to me that the passion and pride no longer seem present. The previously animated and belligerent managerial style has given way to a more morose, and almost resigned manner, mostly spent slumped in the pitch side chair, frozen to the spot as things unravel around him.

All does not appear to be well.

As the letter continues, “January is not an easy time to do business but we are pleased to confirm we are close to securing one of our key striking targets,” Just who is going to sign and play second fiddle to a soon to return (?) Andy Carroll is anyone’s guess, but its unlikely to be a name that will strike fear ion the hearts of opposition defences.

The regularly linked Southampton star Rickie Lambert will want to showcase his talents for the upcoming World Cup so it would be a major surprise if he were to show up at E13 anytime soon. They continue: “A defender is high on the list of priorities as well and progress is being made on that front.” The signing of Roger Johnson from League One side Wolves hardly is wholly underwhelming, and hardly compares with the much lauded potential signing of Dutch international Johnny Heitinga, but beggars can’t be choosers as the saying goes!

As the letter concludes:

“We are under no illusions as to the seriousness of our current predicament in the Premier League,” added the letter.

“But on the board we have a combined talent of running football clubs and we will draw on all of our nous to get West Ham United out of this situation.

“We are all working round the clock to do everything in our powers to help arrest our slump in form.”

I can tell the board without compunction that the blindingly loyal support that follow West Ham will read the bland pronouncements, just like they digest the weekly apologies and excuses trotted out by the manager in his online report and to a man will ask why the predicament wasn’t identified earlier, how will they manage to escape from the current mess without throwing good money at the problem, money we understand they simply do not have, and do they realise that this “slump in form” has been going on since the second week of the season ?

This letter may help the two Davids feel they have helped shore up a critically damaged regime, but it is likely to provoke nothing more than disdain at best and outrage at worst from the long suffering supporters who witnessed one of the all time West Ham United lows on Sunday last.

I think Sam is capable of pulling it off but my only concern is that he may not be able to attract the players at the moment. Harry I believe would. Reckon he'd bring Defoe and Crouch, maybe even Rio. That said, I hope Sam can turn things round and quick.

Thanks CH, I read everyday.

Hilarious. Three managers are mentioned, all ex west ham players.
Do they want to add di canio to that? lol
The sad thing is, unless they are ex players our fans get on their backs after the first defeat.

Thanks CH, interested in your views about Redknapp. I would be ok with him coming back but hard to forgive after antics at Tottscum.

Personally, would go for someone different than Redknapp such as Bilic or Mckay but interested in your views

Do you remember a time there for a while last season when we were saying we missed these days of shyte news coming from all angles and hitting all areas of this troubled club of ours.

Mid table obscurity was a bore last season :P

I would welcome Harry back but prefer Bilic or MM really.

Thanks CH.
