I'm sure more athletics events at Stratford will now draw some decent crowds.

Time will tell..

You are not comparing like with like. The London 2012 Olympics is the athletics equivalent of every major final there has ever been, all in one place, at one time.

I will gladly compare the Olympic atmosphere with that of the 2006 Cup final. Pretty similar in terms of volume and passion.

If your comparing athletics events and West Ham matches, you should compare our boggo league games against unfashionable opponents with the atmosphere at national league athletics matches.

It's not just the athletics, it's the Olympic Games possible the biggest event in the World at it happens to be in London for the first time for over 50 years.

I went to the water polo sat in the back row couldn't see bugger all but still got involved with the GB chants etc ! Good day out in the OP a life time one off, never to be repeated.

Do you really seriously think the crowd and atmosphere will be the same if West Ham play at the OS 20 times or so a season ?

Why will the OS make the atmosphere crap? Assume the stadium is fit for purpose (retractable seating ect). Surely that would be our own fault...

Well there's two sides to this. Firstly they've been having 80'000 in there which might be expected to be about twice what we'll get for the average game, and that must add to the pure volume of noise....

But I don't see why we shouldn't make the same hand of things as we do at the Boleyn, so yes by that basis it would be our own fault.

An athletics crowd, and an Olympic one in particular, is a very different beast to a normal football crowd. For starters everyone's achievements are celebrated enthusiastically - from greats such as Usain Bolt, down to the Turkish high jumper who finally cleared the first height on her third and final attempt. I can't imagine an opposition player ever getting such a reception other than for the most sublime once-in-a-season piece of skill. Although most in the stadium primarily wanted to see Team GB success, the same rivalries do not exist.

Secondly most of them, including myself, have either rarely or never seen any other athletics event other than on TV, and certainly never been in an Olympics in their own country. So for many it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that they are determined to enjoy, and won't get overly upset at a loss or below average performance.

There were also many 'Mexican Waves', music during the events, and so on, which don't and shouldn't really have a place in a league football game.

That said, the noise during Mo Farah's final lap on Saturday night was unlike anything else I have ever heard at a game. While it was a very special moment, such moments of course do occur at football games, and it does bode well for the acoustics at the stadium, if we can come close to filling it.

When I get a chance I will post a few pictures from my various viewpoints in the stadium, to get this thread back to it's original intention :)

I understand what you are saying Pop and agree with you to a degree but the atmosphere against the bigger teams is always decent, but take your average footy fan at the BG, that fan is going to be twice as vociferous as your average day tripper.

You said it yourself, you became involved with supporting teamGB. With 35,000 - 40,000 hammers fans chanting and getting behind the team, surely the day trippers will just join in. Day trippers could get overwhelmed with it all and add to the atmosphere.

Like many have said on here, tuesday night in November against Wigan could be crap, but why should it? It will boil down to the performance on the pitch at the end of the day and the same could be said of Man Utd on a Tuesday night in November against Wigan.

Also bare in mind that there will be an extended roof put on the place which should amplify the noise.

One thing I hope they keep is the sound system at the OS. Pumping out tunes at 1 million watts through 500 massive speakers could surely get everyones blood pumping prior to kick off!

Great post and all points taken on board.

At the BG we have been known to do the Conga regardless of how the team is playing!

Why can't we incorporate a Mexican Wave!

As this is the picture thread, can we please restrict any further contributions to pictures only - or comments on.

Anything else is going to be deleted from hereon. There is an entire forum on which you may discuss other issues relating to the OS.

Thank you.

Each of the "petals" of the torch is engraved with the name of the country (that brought it into the stadium) and London 2012 and are going to be given to the countries that took part.
