80k to 60kPost Olympics, everyone is talking about reducing the capacity from 80k to 60k.
Looking at the pictures on here and on the tv, the stadium appears to be a two tier stadium. So my question is, what are they removing to reduce the capacity (20k seats is not the answer I am looking for)? I mean, if it was a three tier stadium you would imagine that they would take off the top tier, but I can't see there being 60k in the bottom tier.
Re: 80k to 60kClosing off 10K seats behind each goal in the upper tier.
This can be re-opened for concerts and other events.
Re: 80k to 60kOriginally it was going to be reduced to 74,00, this would been achieved by the removal of seats to accommodate the corporate areas.
Of that only 60,00 were deemed good enough for football or rugby, cricket was 73,000, which I'd imagine would lose 1,000 for the sight screens. Figures courtesy of WHU. Those figures were for our original bid, what it will be I doubt will be revealed until decsion is made
Re: 80k to 60kI may have imagined it, but I think I read that the existing seats would be replaced by wider ones as well.
Re: 80k to 60k
Had heard something about them being spaced out a bit more
Re: 80k to 60kDavie S has already said they can not afford to change the seats, so it will not be wider seats. They have said that the Upper Tiers behind each end will not be used.
We will not really be able to alter the structure much as we host the World Championships in 2017
Re: 80k to 60kI dare say they'll only open the lower tier along the sides for 2nd Rd LC games v a Div 2 or 3 club.
Re: 80k to 60k
After which it should either be kept for athletics or knocked down and replaced with a proper football stadium. Lower cost than conversion and better result. Until then we stay at Upton Park. Alternative keep it for athletics, concerts etc, probably with reduced capacity after 2017.
Re: 80k to 60kSorry, am I missing something here? I thought it had been made clear that the upper part of the stadium is temporary and will be removed after the game reducing the stadium to 25k. Thisi s why toilets and catering facilties are outsihe stadium. £90m will then be spent converting it to 60k capacity and providing full permanent fan facilities.
Re: 80k to 60k
You're missing very nearly everything.... The toilets / catering are outside because it's a completely different way of thinking. The idea at the OS is that there are massive walkways so as you can get from A to B fast, therefore it doesn't matter if the pie stall is a bit further away, whereas at a conventional stadium you get from A to B slower therefore the pie stall needs to be nearer. The idea of removing the top tier died ages ago, aint gonna happen. The 90M is to change the roof / put in corporate boxes etc.
Re: 80k to 60k
Going back to the old days, queuing in the cold and rain to buy a cup of tea to warm you up on the Tuesday Night Winter Wigan game It'll be so cold people will come once in the Winter and you'll not see them again when the weather warms up !! Not ideal to attract all these fans on the database. They'll have to do something otherwise it's not fan friendly
Re: 80k to 60kSo why is it so much colder in the OS than UP, exactly? So much so to stop people coming to football games? Come on, do better.
And why is it always a midweek game versus Wigan that gets used as the example? Poor old Wigan.
Re: 80k to 60k
Have you been in a coma?
Re: 80k to 60k
Whilst Wigan are used as an example of one of the teams that people couldn't really be bothered watching as is insinuated on this thread, well don't we always take a massive away support to Wigan? Also, if people are worried about it being cold and wet whilst standing there waiting for their pie at half time, bloody well buy your pie before the game! Maybe thats why we have all these overage fatties amongst our support. The toilets are in the undercroft of the stadium anyway so you aren't gonna get wet unless the bloke next to you pisses on your leg. Jeeez...
Re: 80k to 60k
It's not always Wigan. The joke before the Olympics was that although I couldn't get any tickets for the athletics, I managed to get 30,000 for West Ham v Doncaster. We've been relegated 5 times in the past 30 years - that's once every 6 years on average. Why is it always Chelski/L'Arse/Manure/Spuds that gets used as the example?
Re: 80k to 60k
You don't seem to like our support very much Mr Anderson. In the past 2 days you have called us numpties, drunkards, fatties, overage and abusive and implied we need an entire new fan base. Straight question mate - do you actually go to games?
Re: 80k to 60kI tend to use Stoke on a Cold winters night, then again I'd rather support Stoke than Wigan.
Re: 80k to 60k
It is colder because it is more open and in an open area. I was at the stadium opening ceremony and college athletics in May, it was so cold people where buying Union Jack towels to use to kept warm, in fact most left before the end of the ceremony. There are plenty that won't or don't go in the colder weather
The toilets are under the upper tier or at the back of the food/drink port-a-cabins there is no undercroft there, all of it is outside. Unless they do something with that area, it will mean queuing up outside for a drink etc The place needs a lot more work than some temporary seats to be an all year round stadium.
Re: 80k to 60kUnderneath the upper tier is not outside the stadium in my books....
Re: 80k to 60k
That's some of what the 90M is for.
