Expect another olympic storm today
Typical bbc report by dan roan on radio 5 claiming that west ham are getting the olympic stadium for nothing. West ham are not getting the stadium for themselves, they are the main tenant. They are not being given a stadium for free, they won't own it. There are other tenants including athletics and the rebuild is so that can happen. The first event i'm going to there is rugby. If the public wanted west ham to pay more money they shouldn't have complained about the original deal. There would not be enough income from the other tenants or those previously proposed and there is the potential that if west ham were sold that the money made would go to the public. In a year or so once people go to athletics events or rugby etc no-one will care whilst the money coming in from west ham will be maintaining the stadium and area. It would most likely end up the same as crystal palace or Sheffield athletics stadiums.

More Roan rubbish. I didn't hear the 'even-handed' BBC giving the West Ham point of view...

Apparently West Ham were asked but declined to take part in the programme.bullyhammer wrote:More Roan rubbish. I didn't hear the 'even-handed' BBC giving the West Ham point of view...
Re: Expect another olympic storm today
Ask the businesses of Newham if they would like to welcome 50k+ people every 2 weeks into their area to spend lots of money and then ask a 2 bob BBC hack what his opinion is.
Re: Expect another olympic storm today
Does he suggest what he thinks should happen to the stadium instead of us using it? The guilty party here is Seb Coe and British Athletics who were too arrogant to concede that the stadium would need to be converted after the Olympics - it was them who insisted the stadium was not built in a way it could NOT easily be converted as if keeping as a purely athletics stadium was ever going to be viable. If it wasn't us moving in it would be someone else otherwise the OS turns into one huge white elephant.

Re: Expect another olympic storm today
I agree,it was short-sighted of Seb Coe to think everybody would want to do athletics after 2012 and not even entertain building an adaptable stadium- the first plans drawn up for the development were ignored, they would have been much more viable.BMLGirl wrote:Does he suggest what he thinks should happen to the stadium instead of us using it? I'm sure even the most stupid of journalists can use a calculator?
2.5m per year OS running costs = 208.3k per month
We're renting it for say 25 games (and I'll be generous in calling it 1 game = 1 week), so call it 6 months total time use (rounded up), so that's stewarding and policing (etc) costs of 1.25m for our use
We're paying 2.5m a year rent to the LLDC. They assign 1.25m costs which leaves them a profit of 1.25m to the taxpayer
And we're doing what wrong??
Or are West ham supposed to pay the costs for the LLDC holding every other event there?
This has Tevez style reporting written all over it

Just wished we'd walked away from it when the first award was challenged and the bidding was reopened.
Up until then I was fully supportive of the move, but now it's more hassle that it's worth.

Re: Expect another olympic storm today
I thought the job of a reporter was to report the news not create it .
The time to debate all of this was years ago , the only people who have any right to campaign are West Ham United supporters who will in many cases be paying more for a worse view .
I don't think the taxpayer has got a good deal but it certainly isn't West Ham's fault .If he wants to chuck mud , start with the politicians who decided to build the stadium the way they did .

Don't think we could afford to. If another Premier League team got that stadium/land we would have been right up sh*t street.-DL- wrote:Just wished we'd walked away from it when the first award was challenged and the bidding was reopened.

Re: Expect another olympic storm today
Who cares what Roan and his cohorts say.
Its easy for him to stand on the sidelines and criticise but what were the alternatives?
The tax payer was screwed by the Olympic luvvies and their political mates the moment GB won the bid. The truth is, WHU have bailed them out.
Its a storm in a teacup. The deal has been done. Time to move on.

Re: Expect another olympic storm today
It's alarming how even intelligent people seem to be struggling to discern the fact this is a rental agreement.
Apparently the rent is indexed for inflation, but even at current rates we'll have paid approx £300m in rent over the course of the lease without actually owning it.
The most basic error is the contention that because we're a private enterprise they should have jacked up the rent significantly - the fatal flaw being that had they done so there would be no incentive for the club to give up owning a stadium to move in. The only way that makes sense is for the financials to be at a level where renting makes more sense than owning outright.
