I posted in another thread that I think it is a pre naming rights move. The IOC are a bit funny with the Olympic name being mixed with commercial advertising that they have no control over and that they don't benefit from.

After the Sydney Olympics, they renamed their Olympic Stadium, calling it "Stadium Australia" prior to the naming rights being sold.

All the stadiums we know as Olympic Stadiums, eg Rome, Berlin, Munich and Athens etc have never sold naming rights.

This is also being done for our Europa matches - as it cannot be referenced by a commercial name and all ticketing, advertising, programmes, etc have to refer to it by a non-commercial name. e.g. Arsenal play all their Champions League matches at Ashburton Grove.

Post the Olympics, up until yesterday it has been officially known as 'The Stadium at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park'.

We're also stitching up the use of 'London' in our branding. Looks like elsewhere it's going to have to be Northumberland Park Stadium!

Would they just use a standard name of "Tottenham Hotspur Stadium" or something like that? Surely they could also just recycle the name of "White Hart Lane"? Whereas we have to have a generic name because we don't actually own the stadium.

The new Stadium is nearer to the actual White Hart Lane than the old one. Never really understood why they called the stadium that as it would be like West Ham calling our old ground "Barking Road"

Good point. Did it relate to the train station perhaps? Was that there before the ground was?

Ah, I did not think of that. Just checked Wikipedia and indeed the station predates the stadium...as you were.

I think White Hart Lane is used like some called our ground Upton Park.
Our grounds name of course was the Boleyn and theirs is officially called the Cess Pit.
