I don't really follow this stuff, but my first instinct was that all was all a big publicity stunt?

my first thought..but now 2 other bouts have been canceled due to injuries caused by this ruckus, his mate was a part of it so they banned him.

now the main fight card had Ferguson injured last week, then Holloway declared unfit so maybe Pettis takes over at what, 1 days notice ??? It's not even confirmed from what I can see.

Dan will know what these blokes do to keep fit, but one would have to think that you couldn't be in tip top condition (fighting that is) at such short notice.

After first turning to former champion Anthony Pettis (20-7 MMA, 7-6 UFC), then Paul Felder (15-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC), only to have both denied, the promotion now is targeting Al Iaquinta (13-3-1 MMA, 8-2 UFC) for a fight against Nurmagomedov, a person close to the event told MMAjunkie.

so in reality that's 3 opponents out..at least Iaquinta was/is on the card anyway so he would be fit to go..

Iaquinta currently is scheduled to open the main card against Felder.

but you're right Dan..what a cock up all around.....maybe the girls will end up the main event...????

Khabib Nurmagomedov (25-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) will stay in the headliner in New York and will fight Al Iaquinta (13-3-1 MMA, 8-2 UFC), who will move up from the main-card opening fight against Paul Felder (15-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) for the fight. A person close to the fight revealed the news to MMAjunkie today, and a UFC official subsequently confirmed the news to MMAjunkie.

So now Felder doesn't have an opponent....

The under card will now be about 2 fights, the interim 3 and the sub and main event all over by 10 p.m. EST

Rose Namajunas vs Joanna Jedrzejczyk, should still make for a good fight though, so not all is lost.

I think the bigger issue for short notice fights is weight cutting. Most 155lb fighters are normally 180+ and need a 2 month camp to get their weight to a level where they can safely cut 10lbs of water before the weigh in. Personally, I hate all that weight cutting b*llocks and would rather they fought at their normal weight, which would make for far better fights and fewer cardio issues. It's meant to be a fight, not a weight-cutting competition.

Khabib vs Iaquinta is a complete mismatch as you might expect but we’re into round three. Iaquinta hanging on in there: round five. Easy win for Khabib but Iaquinta made it to the end!

McGregor would destroy Khabib.

Regarding the recent trouble in New York caused by Connor, I notice that the official Instagram page of the UFC showed various videos of the incident, if they were as sickened as White made out, why would they show it? That's like if Noble went on a rampage in Westfield, beating up fans or causing a disturbance, the West Ham official page then showing the footage, it just wouldn't happen.

So you have to wonder what they have to gain by showing it, the story is set Connor will serve a suspension pay a fine, maybe lose his belts then come back for mega a fight vs Khabib.

Fair play the white he knows how to sell a fight, it's all going a bit WWE though, sadly.

Real fight fans don't care about the bull****, though.

Pretty poor night overall.

Couple of decent fights - not quite sure how they scored Rose/Joanna fight but then again I never usually do understand them.

If the last round take down decided the fight as has been mooted, I am puzzled. Wasn't even a great take down imvho.

Dan, what's the "professional's" take on it ??

(yours that is)

I’ve yet to see the fight, but the fightmetrics stats (for what they’re worth) suggest JJ landed more significant strikes, which *usually* goes a long way when judging. Rose got the single takedown and landed more shots to the head. Rose got 4 of the 5 rounds on all 3 judges cards.

There’s a lot of people saying JJ won the fight, equally as many saying she didn’t do enough to “beat the champ”. I’d guess Rose did enough at the right times in each round, a bit like when Bisping fought Wanderlei Silva - Bisping seemed busier in the first 4 minutes, then Silva exploded in the last minute to steal the rounds. Finishing rounds strongly always sways the judges.

Metrics don’t rank damage done either, and having not seen it, I can’t comment. But I’d guess Rose’s targeting the head probably did more visible damage than JJs leg kicks.

MMA judging will always be controversial, and it leads to some highly contentious decisions. The yanks have never forgiven Bisping for celebrating his win over Matt Hammill, even though the 2 judges that scored it for Bisping were yanks. I saw the fight live and thought it was a clear win for Hammill, though watching it after and analysing the numbers made it a lot less clear.

For the record, I’m a wannabe at best. I have some training in jujitsu and kickboxing, but we’re talking club level, nothing more. Think there are a few posters with considerably more experience than I have - there’s at least one Muay Thai specialist that had a legit competition record, but his name escapes me. Not sure if we have any MMA stylists of note here, would be interesting to get a thread going on that front.

cheers Dan

not sure the other guys post on here..wold be interesting to see some input from people with that type of background explain how things go.

as with boxing, some results seem subjective.

I DO understand the "you have to come up with something special to beat the champ" and perhaps getting caught with the "occasion" or having a "personal slant" (or the couple of adult beverages consumed) does make it look sometimes like what the ringside folks and the judges disagree widely. Same as the football crowds and refs/linos I suppose.

I do sometimes wonder though if in close matches if there is sometimes the controversial decision to set up a "rubber" match or another money making opportunity has any effect.

No V.A.R. system in the future then ?

I was just doing some UFC maths in my head as i thought i had a theory of how McGregor - Khabib would go and i've just ended up confusing myself. Initially i thought given that Khabib had mauled dos Anjos, who had done the same to Nate Diaz, that the same would happen to McGregor.

Then i remembered Eddie Alvarez knocked out dos Anjos, who was made to look like an amateur by McGregor, and my theory went to ****. Funnily enough it was dos Anjos who was supposedly McGregors next opponent had he not conducted his bus shenanigans.

RDA also clobbered Lawlor, and he's no bum.

The thing about Khabib - so far, at least - is that everyone knows what he's going to do, but no-one's come even vaguely close to stopping him from doing it. His striking is clearly perfunctory, at best, but dear God, his grappling is absolutely otherworldly.
