Re: Tennis Thread 2017 - Queens & Wimbledon
Muller is a grass court specialist and is having a strong season. He is a danger to everyone. Murray is getting better, but he is not at the stratospheric level he was last year. Djokovic will now need to play today and tomorrow (assuming he wins today of course) so that may take a toll on him. As much as I want Murray to win, it still seems that Federer is the one that has his name on the trophy this year. It could be very clever game management from Murray, in just doing enough round by round, saving his best for the latter stages and if were to succeed it would be a mastersroke. However, I rather feel that for various reasons he is just not as good as he was this time last year when he started his fantastic run of form.
It is also clever game management from Federer in missing the clay season for this. Maybe he recognised that neither Djokovic or Murray were at the top of their games and with neither Wawrinka or Nadal at their best on grass, this was an opportunity for him to win Wimbledon for an 8th time - so far it seems to be paying off.

What are people basing this Nadal Drug's cheat claim on? Not saying you're wrong, just curious

Lots of evidence of "state approved" doping in Spain. Very shady.
His ability to miss events due to injury, then return 2 weeks before a slam to win is very suss, too.
There was also that WADA hack last year that revealed some TUEs for banned substances when he was "injured".
Also, just look at him and the way he plays.

Men's side seems wide open with Novak now complaining about a shoulder injury and Murray still not at his best... losing Nadal has put Federer as favourite now in my eyes!
Women's side is wide open as Well, don't think Konta has enough about her game though to be crowned winner...
Shaping up to be one of the best Wimbledons and slams in recent history

She's the new Greg Rusedski. Although, if she wins, she'll be 100% English.Slacking student wrote:Good to see Jo Konta through. She maybe Australian but she can sure play

I just dont get it.
Born to Hugarian parents in Australia, played for Australia, came to these shores and signed papers to become a British citizen at the age of 21.
As Dan said another Greg Rusedski but at least he had an English mother. There's not a strand of DNA in her bones that makes her British.

Unless she wins, at which point she becomes 100% British. Like Mo Farrah, Mike Catt, and many of our best cricketers.

Federer really is on another level to eveyone else this year. Wouldnt be surprised to see him facing Muller or Cilic in the final.

Sadly, in the eyes of many. But not mine.DasNutNock wrote:Unless she wins, at which point she becomes 100% British. Like Mo Farrah, Mike Catt, and many of our best cricketers.
Re: Tennis Thread 2017 - Queens & Wimbledon
Mike Catt had an English mother and as far as I know Mo Farah hasnt represented another nation. The whole thing surrounding Jo Konta as a British heroine is totally wrong IMO.

British? Australian? Hungarian? Doesn't really matter, that was one of the best women's tennis matches I've watched for a long time. Konta has nerves of steel, Halep didn't do a lot wrong but Konta was the more aggressive and eventually it paid off. Great game of tennis.

It does though if you follow the mass hysteria about Brits doing so well at Wimbledon.Chicken Run Supreme wrote:British? Australian? Hungarian? Of course Konta is as British as a vegemite sandwich, but I'm happy to sit back and just enjoy her tennis.

She came to the UK to live aged 14 having lived in Spain for some months(Wiki)vmixture wrote:I just dont get it.

I don't particularly see the problem, she is a British citizen, she plays under the Union Jack . It's something that happens in sport, how many South Africans have played Cricket for England?
, Anyroads, not worth falling out over, but Konta represented the UK at the Olympics and that's near enough for me.
As to the match today...blimey, that was intense stuff, one of the best Womens matches I've seen .Konta probably won't win it, but her physical and mental strengths seem fantastic , perhaps, like Murray, it's that as 'English' tennis fans, we find a little uncomfortable to embrace!!.
I'm in!

Murray throws away a break to lose the 2nd set. Was totally in control and now 1-1.
Murray moving like yoda between points and road runner during them, funny to watch.

Murray broken 3 times to lose the 4th set 6-1, looks very poor. The American firing aces down in reply. He needs to dig deep here to turn this around.
