Re: Tennis Thread 2017 - Australian Open
Raonic has just missed 6 set points against Nadal to level the match. Nadal had just the one and took it to lead by 2-0.
Fed vs Nadal still a possibility.
Edit. Nadal wins in straight sets, the retro final definitely still on.

Indeed. Murray's consistency at the Grand Slams over the last few years has been phenomenal and perhaps something we take for granted. You just expect him to at least make the Semi Finals.OFT wrote:5 days to go and no British interest left?

With Novak and Murray out its shaping up to be a better end to the Slam than in a long time!
Both these semis gone to 5 sets and being treated to some outstanding tennis!
All I want now is for a Fed win!

That was insane, one of the best tournaments in a long time!
What a match and what a game by both players, Federer reigns supreme though!

Good. Always thought Federer was the more proactive of the two. And he wasn't, to my knowledge, an inexplicable drugs cheat.

Re: Tennis Thread 2017 - Australian Open
I think for me that the good thing about this is that you would often hear mumblings that Federer only amassed 17 Grand Slams because the other 3/4 dominant players were not at their respective peaks during the time he was batting helmets like Philippousis and Safin off court in GS finals.
He's 35 and has just won a tournament where all the others played and he's given them all about 5 years each plus come off the back of 6 months off .

Cracking match but the best thing for me was that we watched a final between two all time greats who didn't spend their time mouthing obscenities at their respective boxes every time a point went against them.
A certain Sir Andrew Murray would do well to take heed.

Re: Tennis Thread 2017 - Australian Open
I didn't think I would enjoy a tournament so well when Murray didn't even make the Quarter Finals but I have to say that was a cracking Australian Open. Of course I wanted Murray to win, he's been runner up 5 times and I'm sure if he was told that he could win only one Grand Slam event in 2017, this would have been the one, but it wasn't to be. With the demise of Djokovic and then Murray a round later, there was talk of a changing of the guard at the top with the new young guns emerging. Well, no-one told Rafa or Roger who rolled back the years as they beat the new kids on the block on the way to what seemed like an inevitable final that did not disappoint.
I would expect Nadal to be a force at Roland Garros and Fed will be targetting Wimbledon as his best hope of a 19th Grand Slam title.
2017 could be interesting.

Re: Tennis Thread 2017 - Australian Open
What's going on in 2017? So far it's all a bit retro with Federer winning 17 out of 18 games played and beating Nadal in two finals!
The way things are going by the end of the year Djokovic and Murray will be usurped by Federer and Nadal. To think it wasn't that along that both were considered to be past their sell by date. Clearly no one's told them yet.

It's being reported that one of the Williams boys is 20 weeks pregnant.
