Re: NFL Thread 2017/18
There's no denying that the '85 Bears defense was off the charts. But they really only had a couple years before Buddy Ryan took off for the Eagles and Ditka lost his mind. The Giants defense of the Parcells era was top of the league for a good 5-6 years, and really intimidated the opposing QBs more than any other unit except maybe the Steel Curtain of the mid-70's.WCpete wrote:
To me it was the best rivalry of the 80's. Better than the Cowboys v Niners, although I'm sure San Jose 49ers fans would dispute that. There were some great, great games played. Poor Joe Montana took an absolute beating over those years.

We ****ed a field goal against them in '87 which was the root of the 2 TD's we scored in the last 2 mins of the first half.bitter-iron-ny wrote:The Gary Reasons fake punt!

Ah, Summerall and Madden...
Yeah, I 'd probably still watch football regularly if Summerall and Madden were immortal and and called every game. They were and are peerless. And of course Jim Gordon who did the radio commentary was equally brilliant for the Giants and Rangers.

And of course you can't leave out the legendary Bob Sheppard who simply was the voice of NY. At the beginning of the video.

Obviously I'm hopelessly stuck in the past. Glorious.

I still can't watch that Theismann sack. It's just too brutal. I remember the game and you could hear the leg snap on the feed.bitter-iron-ny wrote:

I'll stop going on about the G-men of old. I don't mean to hijack the thread. If some of you more recent NFL adopters are interested, look Lawrence Taylor up on youtube. Off the field he was a psychopath, on the field, well he was a psychopath, and arguably the greatest defensive player in the history of the league.
What the hell, I'll do it for you.

A cheeky picture I took outside US Bank before the Minneapolis Miracle. Never known cold quite like this place. Two weeks of temperatures as low as -27c.

Re: NFL Thread 2017/18
And to think they used to play outdoors. When I was young I had a bit of a soft spot for them because they'd play in arctic conditions, they had a coach named Bud Grant who looked stern enough to actually be a viking and their fans would go shirtless in that weather. When they moved indoors they lost their mystique and my good will
It's too bad the arctic weather has lifted from the Phila area for the weekend. It's forecast to be in the 50's. I love a playoff game in the freezing cold from the comfort of my couch.

Should be fun. Wish there was a little playoff winter in Phila and Boston. It's colder here in SF. Oh well.

We just came through our 'cold snap'. Brutal....four days in the mid to high 50s. I even had to scrape some ice off the windscreen one morning.
Anyway, go Jags! And Tay Train is gonna bring it back to the 'ville later on this evening. #choochoo

They look pretty good so far. They're much more physical that the Pats.
Is it the Jags that are going to move in with Spurs?

Toward the end of the half it looked like the officials had had enough of it too. They decided to give the Pats a little help.

Re: NFL Thread 2017/18
Two brutal watches today. Jags had it going their way but a weak PI call helps the Pats down the field, then a delay of game and sack take Jax out of FG range and it was too close for the Pats not to find a way in the second half.
Second game? Ugh. Minny scores on opening drive, then gets the ball back again only to gift the Philth a pick six and the Iggles are on their way to 38 unanswered points. Just painful to watch. Vikings are far and away the biggest choke artists in the NFL. All the way back before the merger, to SB IV, they come up small in big spots. Thanks for laying an egg guys. Now I got to root for the cheatahs....

Re: NFL Thread 2017/18
The only conceivable way for me to root for the Pats is to have the play the Eagles. What an odious SB.
On reflection, I can’t prefer one of these over the other. Can’t be done.

Always like to watch the lead up & Superbowl but not to clued up on NFL history etc.
I've seen the Eagles/Pats/Vikings getting all sorts of hate across the board. How comes? Where does it stem from?

an exciting superbowl on the cards, bit like a tottenham vs. man united cup final, where you hope both teams will lose, possibly because everybody in the stadium died.
