Played at John O'Gaunt in Beds on Wednesday.in a society day. Nice course with very few straight holes so getting your ball in the right place off the tee was the key and only missed 2 fairways all day. Scored 32 points off 16 hcp with 3 blobs and won a 3 way tie on countback for 1st. Would have scored more if my short game and putting was better (same for most people though). Only gripe on the course was the inconsistency of the amount of sand in the bunkers especially around the greens.

Looking forward to playing at Toot Hill next month.

Great course. I'm playing there on Wednesday. Sweetwoods used to be my favourite course but Toot Hill is now.

Played today at Sunbury, fairways absolutely parched. The sixth fairway slopes down to water along the tight and OOB left. I played my usual six iron off the tee aiming for the widest bit expecting a carry of about 150 yards. I did hit it well but still  I measured it with my GPS at 193 yards. With a six iron.

Good luck to the pros at Carnoustie

Played Adare Manor Country Club in Ireland, quite simply the best course I have ever set foot on. Absolutely superb condition and a real tough test. I was delighted to be closing the 18th with the possibility of shooting 90...but took 15, yes 15 strokes on the 18th including 3 water balls and a disaster in a green side bunker! Loved the course up until then. Tipped to be the venue for the Ryder Cup 2026.

Played at Risebridge yesterday, first time I've played there in over 30 years. Obviously, over time the course has matured and the layout was good. The groundstaff work hard with what they've got but the tee areas need improving. I know we've had a long dry spell but on a couple of tees it was nigh on impossible to get a tee peg in the ground and I ended up playing a few tee shots off the deck. However, the greens were in excellent condition and the fairways not too bad either. For £16.50 including a sausage sandwich it was good value, helped by the fact that I shot +9 (including 1 lost ball) and only had 30 putts. Would have been 42 points off my society handicap of 16. I can hear the shouts of Bandit already.

Toot Hill tomorrow, looking forward to a much sterner test but hoping to continue the much improved form and hopefully a handicap cut at the end of the day.

lovely course at times risebridge.. like you say its not perfect but for the price you cant go wrong

you find that with the cheaper courses about the tee pegs.. the better courses water there tee boxes to avoid these issues but obviously they got the money

give me risebridge tho lovely course to play

Society day at Toot Hill yesterday and the good form continued having my best round for years, scoring 42 points and getting my handicap cut to 11. Shot 79 gross (+9), played the front 9 in +1, just kept hitting faiways and greens in regulation and 2 putting.

Course was in good nick and despite the scorching weather, the greens weren't too slick.

Probably gonna be a while til I'm back in the winners enclosure !!!

Found my 5 iron was travelling about as far as my 4 hybrid, so one had to go and it was the 5 iron. That freed up a slot in the bag so I filled it with another Nike hybrid (2 - 17 degree), bought on ebay for £49 and its in mint condition.

Tweaked my 3 wood down to 15 degrees and replaced the Ping putter with a Scotty Futura 6M.

It should really go in the Things That Make You Smile thread, hitting yet another 6-iron and getting the run I hoped for, 197 yards this time :D

this weather is making it most fun lol

Par 5 start yesterday... I always hate first tee in societies and I was literally first to hit so half swung a driver at it.. first cut of rough 223 away.. (nice roll!!!) then 179 yard 5 wood from the rough (was so thin could easily get behind it) but half a swing scooting away, 116 yard gap wedge into the green (downhill) 2 putt for par.. lipped out the birdie

I should add all of these distances are verified by my game golf lol was chuffed considering last year we played there as I got a second ball par because I put the first one OB and then hit the 3rd off tee 269 (litterally landed it on top of the hall and it rolled about 100 yards down the hill nicely)

Like you say, a half swing off the tee gets you as far as bursting a blood vessel does in the winter. The 'fairways hit' stats go down though since the roll is usually stopped by the first cut of rough, although in this weather that can be better than hitting off a concrete fairway.

Still, if it was easy we'd all be millionaires.

Anyone watching the Women's Open at Lytham? There's some decent golf being played and I'd say it's far more relevant to the likes of us than the men's tour. Where the men are hitting a mid iron as far as I hit my driver the ladies are around a club or two longer. Florentyna Parker aced the 9th yesterday, 147 yards with an 8 iron. That's barely a club longer than me, but enough talk about ladies and length.

What I have really noticed compared to ten or twenty years ago is how improved their short game and putting is. I could go on but the delightful Mrs. Boots requires my services in the kitchen.

the ladies game is fantastic, really how we as amateurs should be aiming to be like.. not all about pure power but if you get the technique right you're set

played my round at Romford monday just gone.. both of us 33 points happy with that however jesus not playing romford again

For 1 its defo not worth the cash.. £25 for twilight.. its an alright course.. not worth the £45 or whatever full rate..

but also courses that have as little space as that should focus on building a fantastic 9 holes rather than cram in 18 holes.. so many times if you were just off line you were on the verge of hitting someone... we both were on the first green in reg and if we had been a few yards off to the left we would be off the next tee box.. this was a pattern for most holes until it got over the back where it was much more open.. one hole teeing off over the green you just played lol just made it a bit slow all the time and nervy as hell

Well done Georgia Hall
England's Georgia Hall won her first major title with a two-shot victory at the Women's British Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes.

The 22-year-old is only the third British winner since the event became a major championship in 2001.

Trailing Pornanong Phatlum by a shot overnight, Hall moved clear of the Thai with two holes remaining, and held her nerve to secure victory.
