My best childhood mate , Gwil carried on playing football and was a fitness fanatic well into his late 40s early 50s - he died of motor neurone disease 8 years ago now - he was so fit that he had lived with the disease for at least two maybe three years without he or the medical profession picking it up , he thought that the muscle pains he was getting was from over-exercise , normally [ don't quote me ] you are given 4 years , Gwil must have been into the 4th year and died within a year of diagnosis .

You mention him a lot, ToMoS... I've often wondered how the name is pronounced - is the 'G' semi-silent (as in "H-Wil") or gutteral, like the Welsh "double LL" sound?

Or something else entirely?

His diagnosis came as a huge shock to me , Graeme and to hear him talk over the phone was heartbreaking , he wasn't the same man , I didn't help matters by my crying throughout . He lived 3 doors from me and we were mates from about 4 years onwards - His Uncle Emlyn was a Steward at Everton which was great for us . I always visit his Mam , Betty whenever we go to Anglesey which is usually just once a year now my parents have both passed .
The ' G ' is prounced as the ' G ' in ' Dog ' - as if you'd put a G in front of Will , it's short for Gwilym - It's actually something I've never thought of till now , I think it's the Welsh for William as in the French , ' Guillaume ' sp ?

There's nothing more heart breaking than a disease that causes you to lose your faculties and change you into a completely different person.

Stephen Hawking has been (very loosely speaking) living with MND for decades. Are there varieties of the disease as he seems to be the exception to the 'good as dead' rule?

I'm genuinely curious.

Often wondered about that one myself , CB - why is Stephen Hawking still with us when most are only given a couple of years to live - in Gwil's case his Doctor thought he may have had it for the past 3 years before his diagnosis and symptoms were missed due to his high fitness levels , it's very rare to live beyond two years apparently , five years being the maximum .

Doddie Weir and Bill McLaren are inextricably linked together in my little brain.

"Doddie Weir"

How very sad. A terrible illness.
